Construction of the ITER international fusion experiment, due to go into operation in 2019, is the next major step in the development of nuclear fusion as an energy source. The design of the burn chamber wall will largely determine the success of this international lighthouse project. Forschungszentrum Jülich played a key role in designing the lining of the burn chamber wall of the European fusion experiment JET. The new wall elements made of tungsten and beryllium are based on the design envisaged for ITER and have been in operation since September 2011.
After previous events in San Diego, Toledo, Hefei, Portland, Gifu and Rosenheim, the conference is being organized this year by Forschungszentrum Jülich and will be held in Aachen. More than 350 scientists and engineers from the ITER partners USA, European Union, Russia, China, South Korea, Japan and India are expected to attend.
