Vollständiger Titel: Outbreaks of Bark Beetle and Right Wing Nationalism in Poland's Białowieża Forest: Combining Postsocialism and Posthumanism

As fields of inquiry, both postsocialism and posthumanism help us apprehend a world that is unfinished and ongoing. They refuse tidy distinctions between eras and historical agents and point to processes of contestation and negotiation in the production of knowledge and counterknowledge. This lecture will use a current spruce bark beetle outbreak in Poland’s Białowieża Forest to discuss the outbreak of Polish right wing nationalism. Examining the iconic Białowieża Forest through the lens of post-socialism and post-humanism means perceiving it both as a site of ongoing contestation about the future of Poland and a site about how to interpret Poland’s past. Based on more than 20 years of ethnographic research this talk with bring together two fields of scholarship that have more in common than one might imagine. Post-socialism and post-humanism can point to ways that no one culture, one nation or one species will determine the ultimate outcome of ecological assemblages or political futures.
Eunice Blavascunas is a cultural anthropologist. Her work focuses on central European ecological politics. Currently, she is guest at the GWZO.
