The Blue Economy is a 21st century imperative for the global community. Sustainable growth of maritime-related industries while improving the lives of communities and people is essential to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In light of the COVID19 pandemic, it is important to take a holistic view of the multiple priorities facing the maritime world and ensure that commitment to the SDGs becomes the linchpin around which these issues can be addressed and resolved. Research and policy, as well as the production of knowledge and ideas, must go beyond the relatively narrow scope of SDG 14, which addresses the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. They must include aspects such as improving decent work (SDG 8), gender equality (SDG 5), poverty reduction (SDG 1), and sustainable consumption (SDG 12).
We need to incorporate the importance of new technologies and innovations. At the same time, it is important to strengthen and institutionalize traditional knowledge and historical and cultural practices that have historically led to stronger and more inclusive societies. To empower diverse maritime actors and coastal communities and monitor social and environmental impacts, we need new forms of transdisciplinary knowledge production and transfer that encompass the natural sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities. Therefore, we need to mobilize public awareness and promote an "all of community" approach that encourages leadership from governments, businesses, civil society, universities, and international organizations.
The online workshop, held through the conference program Teams, is organized collaboratively by DSM and SCiLAB. It brings together post-doctoral researchers (in mid-career) and experienced researchers from different disciplines. Participants may be university faculty, research staff from think tanks, or museum professionals. The meeting aims to engage them in an interdisciplinary discussion on sustainable development in the maritime economy. The workshop will include interactive elements and will serve to co-create knowledge. Participants will have the opportunity to apply for a five-minute short presentation.
Objectives
The goal of the workshop is to identify different online and offline education and awareness approaches and discuss the effectiveness of science communication and knowledge transfer. Participants will reflect on how to improve knowledge transfer about the Blue Economy to different stakeholders. The workshop aims to capture best practices and tools, discover educational approaches and key areas of science communication and knowledge transfer that will promote and strengthen sustainability and the Blue Economy.

Call for Flash Talks
As part of the workshop, we invite Participant:s to give "Flash Talks" of no more than five minutes about their work in sustainability and the Blue Economy, with a focus on knowledge transfer and science communication.
A Flash Talk is a presentation (or pitch) of your completed or ongoing work in a short period of time to engage an audience that is not necessarily an expert in your field. Your goal is to inspire your audience and help them learn more about the ideas and processes you are presenting. Your Power Point presentation should be no more than three slides.
The application for the presentation should include the following: Title of the short presentation, name and email address of the presenter, main text (up to 100 words), key objectives and how they relate to the workshop theme "Sustainability and the Blue Economy: communication and knowledge transfer between disciplines and stakeholders" (three objectives), further implications and (if available) publications.
