IVAM Product Market “High-tech for Medical Devices“ at COMPAMED 2014

Mona Okroy-Hellweg Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
IVAM Fachverband für Mikrotechnik

COMPAMED has become an established international marketplace for suppliers of medical manufacturing. The trade show, which takes place every November and is co-located to MEDICA in Dusseldorf, has been steadily growing over the past years and shows that medical technology remains a rapidly growing market.

The joint pavilion organized by IVAM Microtechnology Network, the Product Market “High-tech for Medical Devices”, is located in Hall 8a. After receiving a space upgrade this year, it offers even more room for exhibitors to present their products and services under the roof of the key technologies microtechnology, nanotechnology, photonics and advanced materials. Around 45 international companies and research institutes from nine nations participate in the 680 m² joint pavilion. The focus is on miniaturized components, functional materials and high-precision processes that will improve cost-effectiveness, safety and reliability of medical technology products in the future, e.g. in the manufacture of mobile analysis, therapy and monitoring devices.

With about 45 presentations during three days, the “COMPAMED HIGH-TECH FORUM“ in hall 8 will give comprehensive insights into the medical suppliers market.

Selected exhibitors and products / highlights of the product market

Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung e.V. (HSG) shows a peristaltic micropump with active pulsation damping "PMP-AD", which enables almost pulsation-free pumping of liquids in the range of up to 1 ml/min with a disposable pump chip. Higher flow rates of more than 2000 mL/h can be achieved with a controlled dosage pump consisting of a low-cost reusable actuator and a disposable pump unit. For the near-patient use in mechanical ventilation technology, special MEMS sensors are presented, e.g. for highly dynamic and extremely precise reciprocal respiratory flow measurement. The lab-on-a-chip system "LabDisk” allows the rapid on-site analysis of multiple pathogens. Instead of time-consuming analysis using various laboratory equipment, all processes run automatically on a foil-based disc.

CSEM Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique SA showcases musculoskeletal monitoring - a wireless multi-sensor system to track body movement. It combines physical and vital signs to monitor postures, movements and medical conditions. Forces, muscle activities or joint loads are determined and correlated to ECG signals, sweat analysis or oxygen saturation. Applications range from rehabilitation, orthopedics and continuous medical monitoring to sports. Another product is the Turbisc Pump, a new micropump for precise liquid handling. Pumping is bidirectional, pulsation free and offers continuous flow (up to 2 ml/s). The pump is less than 8.5 mm wide, enabling compact integration. Fluids with a wide range of viscosities from water to adhesives (1-100’000 mPas) can be dispensed. A version with sensor control of the flow rate is also available.

IMT Masken und Teilungen AG is a specialized partner for the development and manufacture of flow cells and biochips in glass, as well as for components for microfluidics, sequencing and sensing applications in life science and biophotonics. The production site using fully automated production equipment from the semiconductor industry enables IMT to achieve cost-effective manufacturing of large quantities with high reproducibility. This means that the use of glass components now becomes possible in applications where it was previously too expensive.

Specialty Coating Systems (SCS) will feature its new mircroRESIST antimicrobial Parylene technology, along with its Parylene conformal coating services at COMPAMED 2014. microRESIST combines the protective benefits of ultra-thin Parylene with antimicrobial properties to effectively eliminate harmful microorganisms on coated medical devices. SCS Parylene coatings are biocompatible, bio stable and offer excellent moisture, chemical and dielectric barrier properties to many medical devices, including stents, catheters, pacemakers, needles and mandrels, and to pharmaceutical containers and applications as well.

Micro Systems UK will be running a Wittmann MicroPower micro injection molding machine cell, producing a demonstrator lab-on-a-chip two component base part. The Wittmann MicroPower micro injection molding machine has a clean room environment, in line camera quality control system with robot orientation for packing. To improve productivity the lab-on-a-chip base micro mold features two moving ejector halves to allow de-mold and molding simultaneously. The micro mold was manufactured by Micro Systems UK and parts are produced by Micro Systems Vienna manufacturing division.
arteos GmbH offers services and equipment for work in milli-, micro- and nanometer range. At COMPAMED the company will present a new service in packaging and assembly process development for microsystems products. Experience from proprietary developments based on the Design for Six Sigma are now on offer, delivering an affordable and process-reliable micro assembly.

CiS Forschungsinstitut für Mikrosensorik und Photovoltaik GmbH will showcase micro laser illumination for analytics: Laser light possesses unique properties. Its beam can be focused narrowly over long distances and its spectrum is very pure. With micro laser illumination users can utilize those properties in small optical sensors. Development goal is a device with 1.4 mm in length which is smaller than a pin head and guides the beam with 300 μm which is narrower than the needle diameter. In the future these devices will be produced cost-efficiently in mass production by a wafer technology. The applications are polarimetry, micro-refractometers and sensors for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This project is funded by the BMWi and carried out in close collaboration of 4 research institutes and 2 companies. The CiS institute is responsible for the optical design as well as for assembly, packaging and testing.

European Sensor Systems S.A. (ESS) provides a line of gas mass flow sensor systems co-integrating a MEMS flow sensor with electronic readouts in a customized mechanical housing. ESS delivers complete engineering solutions whilst adapting flow systems to customer-specific requirements and develops capacitive MEMS pressure sensors underpinned by ESS’ proprietary SOI process. They are integrated into different packages with a signal conditioning IC of the ESS family of ASICs and fully calibrated as well as temperature compensated in the desired range.

Optotune develops and manufactures adaptive optical components based on elastic polymers. The company has invented a lens with tunable focal length. The principle is similar to that of the human eye: a soft, polymer-based lens is bent by applying a control voltage. Optical systems become smaller, cheaper and faster. This holds true for Optotunes most promising innovation, the world’s first 3x optical zoom in a size smaller than a dice. While the miniature camera lens can be expected to cause a stir in the market for camera phones, the lenses are also used by industrial customers e.g. for laser processing or medical technology.

At COMPAMED aerolution GmbH presents its established and reliable sensor technology for measurements of O2 and CO2 concentrations and volume flow rates in human breathing. The technology is used by prestigious global manufacturers and in an own end device. Herein ACE-DXV is a combined module with integrated pump, temperature, humidity and pressure sensors which allows for a one point calibration with ambient air. “The further development of ACEOS technology will lead to so called “cold sensors” for measurements up to 100% O2. New medical applications, e.g. ventilation, will be addressed soon” says Martin Kusch, director of international sensor modules sales.

NanoFocus AG is going to present its measurement system μsurf expert. It is optimized for use in testing and development laboratories and fulfills the highest requirements in the field of non-contact surface measurement technology. The measuring system is equipped with high resolution sensors, linear encoders on all axes (x,y,z) and countless automation options. μsurf expert offers the highest level of operating comfort due to manual z-axis positioning and an ergonomic design. The option of having user-dependent and fully-automatic measurements is a feature of the measuring system for uncomplicated use for quality assurance.
