Russian Scholars in Germany: "We Have Benefited from the Program and the Career Service"

MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Master program followed by career opportunities in consulting and finance / HHL awards further scholarships to students from Eastern Europe in addition to ERP Scholarship

Thanks to scholarships awarded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) through funds from the European Recovery Program (ERP), two Russian students, Natalia Churikova, 27, and Igor Stepanishchev, 27, were able to complete a Master program (M.Sc.) at the first business school established in Germany.

Looking back, Ms. Churikova, who was born in Moscow, says, "During my studies at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management I was able to learn everything I need in order to have a successful career in Germany. The M.Sc. Program, which focuses equally on practice and science, offered me the opportunity to apply knowledge in real-life situations. In Leipzig, I have learned how to address problems in a structured and efficient manner, how to prioritize and analyze facts and how to deal with insecurities. I also greatly benefited from HHL's Career Service. The various networking events held at HHL frequently allowed us to meet corporate representatives and to learn the latest about career opportunities."

Career with McKinsey consulting firm in Moscow

Igor Stepanishchev will remember his time at HHL for a different reason; commenting, "I have particularly appreciated the individual approach taken at the Leipzig-based business school. Whether it was visa issues or academic matters – all my concerns were always taken care of in a proactive and 'customer-friendly' manner so that I was able to focus on my studies and career from day one." Mr. Stepanishchev, who is originally from Voronezh, likes to reminisce about the practically-oriented strategy classes of HHL in cooperation with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. "In my position as a consultant for McKinsey, I use the tools I learned at HHL on a daily basis," says Igor Stepanishchev. Even before graduating from the Master program, the Russian student received a job offer from the Moscow office of the international consulting firm, where he then successfully completed a three-year business analyst program. Igor Stepanishchev is presently completing an MBA program at the University of California, Berkeley in connection with a promotion and subsequent paid educational leave.

Traineeship at Daimler in Stuttgart

Natalia Churikova's career path looks different. Immediately after graduating from HHL, the Russian alumna accepted a trainee position at Daimler Financial Services in Stuttgart. As part of the 15 to 18-month program she familiarized herself with the company, its structure, strategy and products in Germany and abroad. She is thrilled to report, "I am currently working on a project of Mercedes-Benz Bank which focuses on the topics of organizations and the redefinition of roles. In addition to the projects, I gain experience through national and international training courses and workshops. One of our next courses will take place in India."

HHL awards scholarships to Eastern Europeans

Natalia Churikova and Igor Stepanishchev were able to finance their participation in the Master program through scholarships from the European Recovery Program (ERP). It offers economics graduates from abroad the opportunity to complete a Master or post-graduate program in the field of economics at a German university. The scholars are selected by binational committees in their home countries. In addition to the ERP Scholarship, universities in Germany offer their own scholarships to reduce tuition fees or living expenses. In order for students to be considered for the scholarships at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, applicants must have good GMAT results as well as excellent academic performances and prove they are in need of financial support.
