For two days the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology will offer a programme on marine research for pupils in the “Classroom of the Future” at the Frankfurt Book Fair. This year´s guest of honour of the Book Fair is Indonesia, one of ZMT´s partner countries.
At this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) will present a programme for pupils as part of the so-called “Classroom of the Future”. For two days the ZMT will be on site at “Halle 4.2 Science, Specialist Information and Education” to cover the topic “Underwater World”. Across an area of 350 square metres the “Classroom of the Future“ features innovative and digital technology and presents learning as an experimental experience.
Pupils can explore five different topics themed as “Fantastic Islands of Learning”. The focus will be on Indonesia, the guest of honour at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. The island state has been an important research partner of the ZMT for more than 10 years. For the pupils researchers from the ZMT have put together an eclectic mix of experiments inspired by the research of the Bremen-based institute. They will show what effects changing environmental conditions can have on tropical seas and their diverse ecosystems.
How can marine pollution be measured and analysed? What do shells and their growth rings tell us about climate fluctuations? How can we find out if a coral is healthy or not? Equipped with tablets, the young student participants will answer these and many more questions about tropical coastal ecosystems together with the scientists from the ZMT.
The technical approach is taking centre stage – a tablet, for example, will be turned into a photometer to measure nutrient levels in seawater. The pupils will not just gain an insight into detail but will also learn why results from different studies need to be combined to get a complete picture of the current state of an ecosystem.
A booklet, co-authored by the ZMT, will enable pupils to relive their experience at home. This “Schoolbook of the Future” is a hybrid of a printed and a digital book. It features hidden watermarks and can be updated and expanded using a smartphone.
In addition to the topic “Underwater World” presented by the ZMT, the “Classroom of the Future” features a number of different educational subjects from the areas of music, art, media, food and spices – all focused on Indonesia. Aside from the ZMT, the ARD Hörspielbox, Lego Education and RTL Hessen are also on board.
