Franco-German AI Partnership: DFKI and Inria at Viva Technology 2023

Heike Leonhard DFKI Saarbrücken
Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, DFKI

In the 60th anniversary year of the signing of the Élysée Treaty, DFKI and Inria will present partner projects, startups, and their concept for Europe's digital sovereignty at Viva Technology 2023, Paris, June 14-17. The French national research institute for computer science and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence will demonstrate computer-brain interfaces for use outside the lab, among other things. Together with eight other academic partners and the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland, they form the Franco-German Tech Lab in Hall 1, Stand D11 of the Tech and Start-up Fair.

Inria and DFKI have been collaborating since 2020 on a joint strategic research and innovation agenda in the fields of AI for Industry 4.0, AI infrastructures, AI and cybersecurity, human-robot interaction, and health. As the driving force of Franco-German cooperation in artificial intelligence, Inria and DFKI connect German and French AI researchers and advance research for AI that benefits humans and respects fundamental European values.

DFKI presents the spin-off b4value.net as well as two of the joint research projects with Inria. On one of the main stages, Pierre Alliez, Senior Researcher at Inria Sophia Antipolis, and Philipp Slusallek, Executive Director at DFKI Saarbrücken, discuss how Europe can take a leading role in the development and application of AI.

"Inria and DFKI: Towards European digital sovereignty."
Pierre Alliez, Inria, and Philipp Slusallek, DFKI
    Wednesday, June 14, 2:50 – 3:10 p.m.
    Hall 1, Main Stage 2

    B4value.net
DFKI will present its spin-off B4value.net on all four trade fair days. The service provider for digitization makes AI technologies and digital business processes accessible to SMEs as well. The platform technology developed by b4value.net enables companies of all industries and sizes to efficiently exchange business documents electronically and to use all advantages of digital communication profitably. B4value is part of the TRAFFIQX® network for European electronic document and data exchange.

Depressive, schizophrenic, or bipolar – How AI can help classify psychiatric disorders – MePheSTO research project.
People with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression are often impaired for life, have a shorter life expectancy, and have a higher suicide rate. Anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorders and substance use are common comorbidities. The interdisciplinary research project MePheSTO of DFKI and Inria is developing a framework for digital detection and separation-focused differentiation of psychiatric disorders. MePheSTO uses social interaction data to detect acute episodes of illness, predict courses, and support therapy.
    Project presentation:
"Depressed, schizophrenic, or bipolar? How AI helps classify psychiatric disorders – Project MePheSTO.”
Alexandra König, Inria, and Hali Lindsay, DFKI
    Wednesday, June 15, 4:10 – 4:40 p.m.

Noiseless and variability-free BCI systems for use outside the laboratory
Brain-computer interfaces, or BCI for short, offer a promising possibility for interaction between the human brain and technology. In the planned joint project NEARBY (Noise and Variability-free BCI systems for out-of-the-lab use), researchers from DFKI and Inria now want to address this. They will present their project to the public for the first time at Viva Technology.
    Lecture with live system demonstration:
"Bringing brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) out of the lab and into the home – project NEARBY."
Fabien Lotte, Inria, and Maurice Rekrut, DFKI
