Interdisciplinary Symposium: Summer Solstice in Berlin - the "New" Age of Club & EDM Culture

Berlin and music have always been an inseperable combination - especially electronic music has been at the center of attention for several decades now. At the Berghain Kantine, the event location of Berlin's most infamous techno club, this interdisciplinary and practically oriented symposium displays how many different theoretical and practical perspectives exist on the topic of electronic music nowadays.

Berlin is one of the major music metropolises worldwide with its strong music history, many labels, publishers, artists, and networks. Especially electronic music has been playing a dominant role, ever since clubs have opened their doors from the 1980s.

On Wednesday, 21st of June, the one-day interdisciplinary "Summer Solstice Symposium: The 'New' Age of Club and EDM Culture" will highlight the different scientific and practical approaches to this topic with three sessions and a panel.

Session 1: Scientific talks with Dr. Botond Vitos (PhD with specialization in cultural studies at Monash University, Melbourne); Dr. Jan-Michael Kühn (sociologist with specialization in electronic dance music), Christine Preiser (Max-Planck-Institut, specialized in studies of work life of bouncers) and Anita Jóri (research assistant at Vilém Flusser Archiv, Universität der Künste, PhD topic „The discourse community of electronic dance music“).

Session 2: Practice-orientied presentation by Aiko Okamoto (female:pressure), Lukas Drevenstedt (commercial director Clubcommission Berlin, Dr. Benedikt Brilmayer (Musikinstrumentenmuseum Berlin)

Session 3: Hands-on Workshops on music production with Camille Darroux (http://camilledarroux.com/), supported by NATIVE INSTRUMENTS

Panel amongst others with Katja Lucker (Managing Director, Musicboard Berlin), moderated by Prof. Dr. Martin Lücke
