Das Weltarmutsproblem wird oftmals als die größte moralische Herausforderung unserer Zeit betrachtet und dementsprechend vor dem Hintergrund aller wesentlichen ethischen Theorien diskutiert. Immanuel Kants Ethik ist einer der Hauptbezugspunkte für gegenwärtige DeontologInnen und DenkerInnen, welche sich den Problemen der globalen Gerechtigkeit von einem nicht-Konsequentialistischen Ausgangspunkt nähern. Unsere Konferenz verfolgt zwei, zusammenhängende, Ziele: Erstens soll untersucht werden, was Kant selbst zu Problemen der globalen Armut zu sagen hat. Dies wird ein neues Licht auf einige seit langem diskutierte exegetische Fragen, wie z.B. die Natur der latitudo, das Verhältnis von Recht und Moral und den Status von moralischen Gefühlen, etc. werfen. Zweitens soll kritisch diskutiert werden, ob die kantische Reaktion auf globale Armut systematisch überzeugend ist und Lücken in der gegenwärtigen systematischen Debatte schließen kann. Dafür sollen eine Reihe von Punkten, welche die kantische Philosophie vor anderen Ansätzen auszeichnen, wie etwa die Pluralität von verschieden gearteten Pflichten, die genaue Natur der latitudo welche weite Pflichten verstattet, die Rolle von moralischen Gefühlen sowie von Institutionen und Staaten im Kontext der Debatte um globale Gerechtigkeit erörtert werden.

Global poverty is one of the greatest moral challenges of our time, and it is thus subject matter of heated debates within and across all ethical theories. Immanuel Kant’s ethics is one of the main points of reference for current deontologists and other thinkers who approach ethical issues with a focus on other factors than (foreseeable) consequences. Our conference has two related goals. Firstly, we will investigate what Kant himself has to say about global poverty and global justice. This will cast a new light on a number of contentious exegetical issues, concerning the nature of latitude, the relation between juridical laws and ethics, the role of moral feelings, etc. Secondly, we will discuss critically whether Kant’s and Kantian takes on global poverty and global justice are convincing and how they can contribute to the current discourse.
