Workshop: Return and labor migration in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) will hold a joint workshop on "Return and Labor Migration in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989” on Wednesday, 7 March 2018 at the GWZO in Leipzig. The event will focus on the economic, social and political motivations of migrants and returnees, a topic that has become increasingly important over the years.

Processes of migration for economic, social or political motives have a long tradition in Germany and the states of Central and Eastern Europe. After 1989 however, they have significantly intensified, both in numbers and in importance. This workshop reflects on two particular aspects of the general phenomenon: return and labor migration. Joyce Bromley focusses on German farm families who in 1945 fled to the West ahead of the Red Army, or who were evicted by the orders of the Soviet Military Administration. Some of them returned to their family holding. Robert Nadler presents the findings from an online survey conducted among 2,000 Central European migrants on their reasons to emigrate, stay abroad or return home. Alina Tofan examines the impact of labor migration on social changes in rural areas in the Republic of Moldova.
