The 4th Geneva Convention for Civilians (1946–1949)

Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Mittwochsvorträge in Specks Hof

Vollständiger Titel: Eastern Europe's Important Role in the Making of Today's International Law of War: The 4th Geneva Convention for Civilians (1946–1949)

Referent: Gilad Ben-Nun, PhD (Universität Verona/EEGA)

Moderation: Dr. Dietmar Müller (GWZO)

The 1949 Geneva Conventions forms the core of today’s laws of warfare. Paramount amongst these – is the 4th Geneva Convention for Civilians ('GC-IV') – the only treaty in the entire history of International law, in all its branches – to be signed and ratified by all the world's states. GC-IV has served as the textual blueprint for the Statues of all post-Cold-War International Criminal Tribunals (ICTY / ICTR / CCCT) and has provided the legal bedrock for the ICC’s 1998 Rome Statute. Yet who wrote it ? What were the true intentions of its drafters? Lastly: What role did Eastern-Europe play in its making ?

In this lecture – Gilad Ben Nun (currently EEGA fellow) will present research resulting from his EU Marie Curie fellowship at Verona University’s Law Faculty (2016-2018), where he has authored a drafting history of GC-IV.
