Is Europe on Track for a Green Recovery?

High level discussion event and official launch of the "Green Recovery Tracker"

The Covid-19 crisis has hit economies around the world, forcing governments to mobilise unprecedented amounts of public funding to stabilise markets and enable a fast recovery. In Europe, the response includes the novel Recovery and Resilience Facility, which will finance 673 billion euros worth of additional public expenditure across member states over the next few years.

All EU member states are currently preparing national recovery plans to access these funds. These plans provide a unique opportunity to both mobilise much-needed investments for the green transition and initiate necessary structural reforms.

To enable national and EU-level actors to closely follow the process and assess these recovery plans, Wuppertal Institute and E3G have developed a dedicated online platform, the Green Recovery Tracker, that will, in collaboration with national and sectoral experts, provide analyses on the alignment of national recovery measures with the green transition. The event will hence be an opportunity to take stock of the progress achieved in the EU on realising a green recovery from the Covid-19 crisis to date, and to identify the necessary next steps. A beta version of the website can already be accessed.

The Green Recovery Tracker will be officially launched with a high-level discussion event on 17 March, 2021, 14:00 to 15:30 pm.

After the keynote by Connie Hedegaard, Chair of OECD Round Table on Sustainable Development and former European Commissioner for Climate Action, Timon Wehnert, Head of Berlin Office of the Wuppertal Institute, will present the lasts findings on the state of European Green recovery. Afterwards, the following experts will discuss on the panel and identify challenges and necessary improvements to the recovery plans:

- Laurence Tubiana, CEO, European Climate Foundation

- Martin Hojsík, Member of the European Parliament, Member of the Environment Committee, Renew Europe, Slovakia

- European Commission (tbc)

- Nick Mabey, CEO at E3G, will open and moderate the event.

Registration on the Zoom event and information on the beta version of the Green Recovery Tracker can be found in the links below.
