This year’s DAAD Award for Outstanding Achievements by International Students at the Northern Institute of Technology Management (NIT) in Hamburg goes to Andrew Toth from the United States. The German Academic Exchange Service awards the prize, worth €1,000, for both outstanding academic achievements and social and societal commitment by international students.

Andrew Toth from Kansas has just completed his master’s program in technology management at NIT, majoring in entrepreneurial management. He is also studying environmental engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). “Andrew’s personality and his special societal commitment at the NIT and the TUHH convinced the selection committee,” said NIT President Professor Dr.-Ing. Otto von Estorff, announcing the winner of the DAAD Award in the ceremonial atmosphere of the NIT’s graduation ceremony.

Andrew Toth speaks fluent German. Last year he was in charge of implementing Ökoprofit certification at the NIT. One of the aims of the Ökoprofit environmental management project is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at NIT. In addition to his work for the environment the 25-year-old engineer is an active member of TEDxTUHH. TED, sort for Technology, Entertainment, Design, is an event format for sharing ideas that originated in the United States and is increasingly gaining popularity in Germany. The next TEDxTUHH conference, which he is helping to organize, will be held in November. The team has just launched the 30 Day Challenge (www.tedxtuhh.de). Andrew’s personal challenge is to climb a different roof every day for a month.

Toth already has a plan for the DAAD prize money. “I am going to visit my family in Kansas,” he said. “I haven’t been there since I started my studies at NIT.”
