IAMO hosts panel discussion at this year’s EuroTier in Hannover
Halle (Saale), 30 October 2014 – Milk yield per animal has more than doubled in Ukraine since the collapse of centrally planned economy in the early 1990s. Albeit that current yield rates are still lagging far behind the levels of modern high-performance milk production and the present political situation in eastern Ukraine is uncertain, targeted investments into Ukrainian dairy production can help exploit considerable potentials in this sector in the future. A panel discussion titled ‘Investment opportunities in Ukrainian dairy production’ at EuroTier on 12 November 2014 in Hanover will provide a forum to debate issues relating to promising investments and associated challenges to agribusinesses.
The event will be opened by IAMO researcher Oleksandr Perekhozhuk who will provide an overview of the current level of development in Ukrainian dairy production. He will discuss both existing subsidy programs run by the Ukrainian government and managerial aspects and problems of dairy farms. A practice-oriented view on developments in the past ten years as well as investment opportunities in Ukrainian agriculture will be presented by Johann Wenzl, founder and shareholder of the Ukrainian agribusiness dukra agro. Mariya Yaroshko, German-Ukrainian Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD), will speak about livestock farming, dairy production and agricultural policy challenges in Ukraine. She opines that adapting Ukrainian legislation to the European legal framework as well as improvement of product safety and quality are essential prerequisites for enhancing export opportunities of Ukrainian dairy products. The Association Agreement with the European Union is of high significance for Ukraine, not only in political but also in economic terms.
The ensuing panel discussion will be moderated by Dieter Mirbach, German Agricultural Society (DLG), and provide an opportunity for the audience to direct theme-related questions to the expert panelists and exchange their views with each other.
EuroTier is the world’s leading trade fair for animal production. Displays by more than 2,300 exhibitors from some 50 countries will be supplemented by a comprehensive framework program with symposia, conferences, specialist lectures and discussion rounds. EuroTier is hosted by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and will be held from 11 to 14 November 2014 at the Hanover exhibition grounds.

About IAMO
The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyzes economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyze strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
