The EU project “Joining Efforts for Responsible Research and Innovation”, known as “JERRI” has been launched, coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. Fraunhofer and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO are working on anchoring Responsible Research and Innovation in their organizations. The objective of the project is to trigger the transformation of the organizations with various pilot activities and to enable learning effects for other applied research organizations in Europe.
Fraunhofer and TNO, large European organizations for applied research, want to work together on making social responsibility a permanent feature of their decision processes and research content. As well as Fraunhofer ISI and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft’s headquarters, the Fraunhofer institutes IAO, IRB, and UMSICHT are also participating in the Fraunhofer consortium. In a mutual learning process with TNO, they are promoting pilot activities along five dimensions: Ethics, gender equality, open access, involvement of society in questions, strategies and activities of science, and science education. On the conceptual side, activities are being supported by the University of Manchester. A continuous evaluation of the project activities is being carried out by the Vienna-based Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS).
“We want to orient our research towards society’s needs and want to achieve a substantial shift in the attitudes in our organizations. This means we cannot just follow prefabricated models or guidelines. If responsible research and innovation is to be lived, participants should develop the goals and measures themselves“, says the project coordinator, Dr. Benjamin Teufel. This will take place in different stakeholder workshops that will lead to a joint roadmap for the pilot activities and beyond.
JERRI will run for three years. Ongoing evaluation of the activities and results is planned as is an international exchange in the scientific community. The Fraunhofer ISI has extensive experience in the field of responsible research and innovation through its projects “MoRRi”, short for Monitoring the evolution and benefits of Responsible Research and Innovation, and “Res-AGorA”, short for Governance frameworks for Responsible Research and Innovation (http://www.res-agora.eu), which will be used as input to the project.
