One year of Erasmus+ at IST Austria

Dr. Elisabeth Guggenberger Communications and Events
Institute of Science and Technology Austria

All staff members—scientists as well as administrative personnel—can take advantage of the staff training mobility program | 19 employees have made use of the program so far

In the summer of 2016, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) in Klosterneuburg near Vienna received an Erasmus+ grant for the staff training mobility program within Europe. A look back on the first year of staff training mobility reveals the success and popularity of the Erasmus+ program at IST Austria: A total of 19 people (13 scientists and six administrative staff members) have traveled to various European destinations to expand their knowledge through workshops, courses, summer schools, job shadowing or experimental technique trainings. IST Austria’s Erasmus+ participants have visited Sweden, Belgium, Italy, France, Iceland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

The Erasmus+ staff training mobility grant is funded by the European Union, and enables participating institutes to send staff to on-site trainings at other institutions within Europe in participating Erasmus+ program countries. It contributes funding towards travel and subsistence (accommodation and living) costs to support staff while abroad, in order to encourage collaboration and information exchange between EU countries. At IST Austria, the length of a training trip can range from a minimum of two days to a maximum of 4 weeks.

By signing the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), IST Austria has committed to providing all necessary support for the mobility activities of incoming and outgoing Erasmus+ participants from linguistic support to mentoring. As an international research institution with employees from more than 50 different nations, IST Austria encourages an open-minded curiosity for international exchange of knowledge and expertise, and is looking forward to many more years of Erasmus+ staff training mobility.

Cofunded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union. In Austria, the Erasmus+ program is coordinated by the National Agency for Erasmus+ Education of the Austrian agency for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research (Österreichischen Austauschdienst, OeAD, www.oead.at)
