Following the success of its first Scientific Image Competition, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) will launch a second competition in 2018.
More than 230 people took part in the SNSF Scientific Image Competition in spring 2017. An international jury selected the winners, who were awarded their prizes at the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography. Selected works were subsequently exhibited at the Fondation Suisse in Paris and the Zurich Film Festival. "The first competition greatly exceeded our expectations," says Daniel Saraga, project manager of the competition at the SNSF. "Artistic contributions, impressive images and astonishing stories highlighted little known aspects of science. And thanks to the various exhibitions, we were able to reach a large audience."
For this reason, the SNSF decided to run the competition again in 2018. The aim is to encourage researchers to offer an insight into their work, whether by showing an object or portraying a person.
Award ceremony at the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography
As for last year's competition, the award ceremony will be organised in collaboration with the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography (4 - 27 May 2018), where the winning images and videos will be exhibited.
All scientists working at a research institution in Switzerland are eligible to participate. Participants can submit entries for the following four categories:
• Object of study
• Women and men of science
• Locations and instruments of research
• Video loops
The SNSF is now calling on all researchers: grab your camera and send us your best, most surprising and spectacular images to give us an insight into your research environment! The submitted image or video must have been produced after 1 February 2017. Submission deadline: 31 January 2018

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
