In Winter Semester 2018/19, the HFT Stuttgart, Germany is launching its new English- language Master course ‘Smart City Solutions’, the only one of its kind in the world..
In three semesters and in an international environment, students will acquire comprehensive skills in the fields of smart city planning and buildings, smart infrastructure (energy, mobility, resource management, resilience) and smart city project management, as well as financing and digitalisation. The global demand for smart city experts is so high that graduates can expect to secure employment in future-oriented fields in public administration and IT companies as well as in consulting and engineering companies after gaining this degree.

More and more people around the world are moving to the conurbations in search of work, prosperity and a better standard of living. One result of this is urban sprawl – the unchecked expansion of city boundaries coupled with a significant increase in the number of people‘s mobility. This is not only true about developing and emerging countries but also about major European cities. Cities around the world are increasingly suffering from noise pollution, congestion, gridlock, and harmful air pollution. Urban agglomerations in numerous parts of the world are also facing challenges of poverty, uncontrolled growth, mountains of rubbish, power cuts and a lack of or inadequate drinking water. Shortcomings in public safety are having an adverse effect on the quality of life of millions of people. A number of cities are also experiencing the impact of climate change first hand. Huge investment is required in both the social and technical infrastructure to take people in the direction of a livable urban future.
The smart city approach for livable cities
This is the point of departure for the smart city approach of HFT Stuttgart’s new English-language ‘Smart City Solutions’ Master‘s course. The smart city approach is based on the realisation that subject-specific competencies in the areas of transport, energy, urban development, administration, construction law etc., which have until now been rather poorly connected, will only meet the complex requirements of the livable, future-oriented city if there is a close interaction between these fields in future.
Focus on engineering, financing and management
The HFT Stuttgart has been making significant contributions to a sustainable world for many years now, with study courses that focus on energy, mobility, economic viability and climate-friendly construction, both on the scale of individual buildings and cities as a whole. In parallel with these courses, HFT Stuttgart also carries out research in the ‘i-City’ subject area.
In the existing ‘International Project Management’ Master‘s course, which has been running for over 16 years, lecturers and students engage with the issue of sustainability, with a particular focus on city and infrastructure management. Students from more than 46 countries have graduated from this English-language Masters course at the HFT Stuttgart.
„Based on this extensive experience, from Winter Semester 2018 the HFT Stuttgart will offer students the opportunity to study these global, city-related topics in more depth in a trans-faculty Masters course called Smart City Solutions,“ explains Professor Roland Dieterle, Academic Dean of the International Project Management Master‘s course, who has also been responsible for designing and developing the new Smart City Solutions Masters course.
In addition to the ‘Master of Engineering’ from HFT Stuttgart, students enrolled on the course can also gain a additional MBA-option from the John Moores University in Liverpool, UK.
International career opportunities for ‘Smart City’ graduates
The smart city is an approach that is discussed intensively around the world – in Rio de Janeiro as in Mumbai, in Copenhagen as in Bangkok – and it is one that is yielding individual answers to similar questions. The Indian government, for example, has announced a programme that will initially see 100 cities going ‘smart’. The process of forming appropriate consultancy teams for the task ahead, which is completely new in this form, is well underway around the world. The three-semester ‘Smart City Solution’ course will impart precisely the knowledge and skills relating to the global and local environment, state-of-the-art technological developments, management approaches and business administration frameworks needed to succeed in this field.
