German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina – ten years of science based policy advice

Caroline Wichmann Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina

On 14 July 2008 the Leopoldina was designated as the German National Academy of Sciences by the Joint Science Conference of the German federal and state governments. Since then it has worked together with the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering in addressing the key challenges facing society. As a national academy it represents German science at the international level.

“Working with our members from all over the world, we will continue with our commitment to making scientific expertise the basis of societal and political discourse,” proclaimed the Leopoldina President Prof. Dr. Jörg Hacker regarding the role of the national academy.

The Leopoldina will celebrate its anniversary as the national academy at this year´s annual assembly under the heading “Nature – Science – Society” on 21 and 22 September in Halle (Saale). Academy members and guests will thereby look back at topics that were taken up early on by the Leopoldina and that will continue to shape its work into the future. These include the societal effects of digitization, the threat to biodiversity in the agricultural landscape and the medical-ethical issues surrounding genome research.

“The German National Academy of Sciences is the heart and the voice of German science. The Leopoldina embraces its role as a mediator of scientific knowledge with a remarkable level of diligence,” observed German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and added: “As a result, it is held in the highest regard, both nationally and internationally. I would like to now express my sincere thanks for the great job it has done over the last ten years. I look forward to hearing from the Leopoldina in its capacity as a driving force in the shaping of future public opinion and wish it continued success in its collaborative work that continues to strengthen Germany´s position as a centre of scientific enterprise.“

Saxony-Anhalt´s Minister President Dr. Reiner Haseloff commented similarly: “The knowledgeable and independent advice emanating from the Leopoldina´s high-level scientists is indispensable for shaping the future and will be listened to in Saxony-Anhalt as well."

The Leopoldina, which was founded in 1652, has its headquarters in Halle (Saale) and also maintains an office in Berlin´s government district. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (80 percent) as well as by the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt (20 percent).
