The Jacobs Foundation and Jacobs University Bremen are organizing an international challenge to find innovative and radical ideas for future higher education. The guidelines were developed in November 2018 during the symposium "B³ - Bildung Beyond Boundaries". Applications can be submitted effective immediately. In the course of the challenge, the Jacobs Foundation will fund selected projects with a total amount of up to 650,000 Euros (750,000 Swiss francs).
The challenge will promote cooperation between international and interdisciplinary teams and focuses on evidence-based educational research. "The participants of the challenge B³ - Bildung Beyond Boundaries came from very different fields, such as computer science and psychology. The discussions with them have encouraged us to look for radical ideas from very different perspectives in our ideas competition," says Sandro Giuliani, Managing Director of the Jacobs Foundation. "We are already looking forward to the submissions and to accompanying the projects scientifically at our university together with the idea providers" adds Prof. Dr. Michael Hülsmann, President of Jacobs University.
Who can apply?
Interested scientists as well as experts from EdTech start-ups can realize and test ideas for projects on the campus of Jacobs University in close cooperation with research and teaching staff as well as students. Possible topics could be: learning and teaching in diverse teams or large groups, social-emotional learning, motivation, emotion, affective well-being, individual differences, interdisciplinary and subject-specific learning, digital learning, blended learning, online measurement, peer-learning, peer-support networks, non-academic questions and their impact on learning.
Three types of projects
The initiators welcome exposés of the following three project types, all of which will be implemented and tested at Jacobs University:
1. Evaluations of interventions/programs/technologies
2. Add-ons to existing interventions/programs/technologies, wherein applicants seek to enhance an existing program
3. Smaller “proof-of-concept” projects
Application and timetable
Interested scientists as well as experts from EdTech start-ups can send their project ideas to jf@jacobsfoundation.org by 31 January 2019. Following an internal pre-selection process, selected applicants will be invited to Bremen for one day in February 2019 to get to know the campus and the research and teaching staff and to prepare their exposé by the end of April. An international jury will evaluate the submissions and propose projects for funding. The final funding decision will be made by the Jacobs Foundation in June 2019. The projects are expected to start in fall 2019 and have a maximum duration of two years.
