New Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes starting Winter Semester 2019/20

Brigitte Kohlberg Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

What’s next now that you’ve graduated from high school? Vocational training or a university education? And will you start working right away after your Bachelor’s degree, or get a Master’s degree first? Anyway, with its wide range of attractive degree programmes, the University of Bayreuth is a good place to turn to for answers. In 2019, our broad spectrum of currently 154 study programmes will be expanded by seven study programmes: two new Bachelor’s and four new Master’s programmes, as well as a continuing education Master's programme.

The University of Bayreuth, located in northern Bavaria, has always reacted flexibly to social changes and the related demands on science and business by creating innovative, interdisciplinary programmes. With around 13,500 students, the University of Bayreuth is a comfortable size, and its students and instructors get to know each other more quickly thanks to the University’s unique campus. This promotes interdisciplinary thinking and cooperative relations, which is indeed reflected in a large number of interdisciplinary courses of study.

The new study opportunities for the winter semester 2019/20 at a glance:

    Two new Bachelor’s programmes
Franco-German Bachelor of Laws – Economics and Institutions LL.B.*
Electrical Engineering and Information Systems (B.Sc.) *

    Four new Master’s programmes
    Global History (M.A.)
History in Science and Practice (M.A.)
    Scientific Computing (M.Sc.)
    Opera and Performance (M.A.) *

A new continuing education or occupational training Master’s degree programme
    Responsibility, Leadership and Communication (MBA)

    * subject to approval by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts

Important: For all degree programmes: Registration or application by 15 July 2019!

Brief description of the new Bachelor's degree programmes

German-French Bachelor of Laws in Economics and Institutions, Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Licence Mention Droit *
After six semesters, students acquire a double degree recognised in Germany and France: a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Bayreuth and a Licence Mention Droit from the University of Bordeaux Montaigne. The course covers German and French law as well as the fundamentals of economics. Sponsored by the Franco-German University, it opens up excellent career prospects for graduates in German, French, and international organizations and companies. Lecture languages: German, French, English; selection procedure.

    Programme Coordinator Prof. Dr. Kay Windthorst, Phone: +49 (0) 921 / 55-6020, E-mail: kay.windthorst@uni-bayreuth.de

Electrical Engineering and Information Systems (B.Sc.) *
The course of studies is aimed at those striving for an interdisciplinary education at the interface of hardware and software. Graduates will have a sound scientific background in mathematics, natural and engineering sciences, and computer science, and will be qualified for professional tasks in the growing area of complex, networked systems, a.k.a. the Internet of Things (e.g. electronics and telecommunications, automotive industry, energy service providers, research institutes, etc.). Language of instruction: German; no admission restrictions.

Brief description of the new Master’s degree programmes

    Global History (M.A.)
The course conveys special knowledge of the history of Africa, Europe or America, and the Atlantic world. Graduates will be able to present complex global issues in a structured and differentiated way in their professional or scientific environment, work on issues of globalisation using different scientific methods in an interdisciplinary manner, and take on management tasks thanks to their expertise. Potential employers could, for example, be internationally active companies, associations and research institutes, but also the national labour market, since the course of studies is combined with modules from the likewise new course of studies ‘History in Science and Practice’ (see below). Language of instruction: English; no admission restrictions.

Programme Coordinator Prof. Dr. Joël Glasman and Prof. Dr. Kristin Skottki
    Prof. Dr. Joël Glasman, Phone: +49 (0) 921 / 55-4640, E-mail: joel.glasman@uni-bayreuth.de
    Prof. Dr. Kristin Skottki, Phone: +49 (0) 921 / 55-4165, E-mail: kristin.skottki@uni-bayreuth.de

History in Science and Practice, Master of Arts (M.A.)
The course of studies offers either the field of study ‘Public History’, or the choice of a scientific focus. The choice between a practice-oriented degree in ‘History and the Public’ and a more subject-specific focus can be made during the course of studies. The programme focuses on areas of activity that are already central to graduates of historical courses (museums, exhibitions, archives); it also prepares them for professional fields such as tourism or digital media. Language of instruction: German, English; no admission restrictions.

    Programme Coordinator Prof. Dr. Martin Ott, Phone: +49 (0) 9228 / 99605-16, E-mail: martin.ott@uni-bayreuth.de

    Scientific Computing (M.Sc.)
The programme combines mathematical modelling with the efficient numerical solving of complex problems in science, technology and economics. The research and development of products today would be unthinkable without numerical simulation on computers. The specific applications of scientific computing range from crash tests to electromagnetic compatibility, optimization of fuel cells, calculating prices of financial derivatives, to the simulation of biological processes. With the new international mathematics course, the University of Bayreuth is equipping particularly capable students for future challenges in the field of numerical simulation. Language of instruction: German, English; no admission restrictions.

    Programme Coordinator Prof. Dr. Mario Bebendorf, Phone: +49 (0) 921 / 55-7150, E-mail: mario.bebendorf@uni-bayreuth.de

    Opera and Performance (M.A.) *
The programme concentrates on opera as a multimedia ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, and as such is unique in the German-speaking world as a scientifically oriented course of study. The new Master’s programme follows on consecutively from the two relevant Bayreuth B.A. programmes ‘Music Theatre Studies’ and ‘Theatre and Media’, but differs from the existing Master’s programme ‘Music and Performance’ in its focus. ‘Opera and Performance’ is for students who are striving to pursue research, or would like to qualify on a scientific basis for tasks in the demanding area of culture management. Cooperating partners in the programme are theatres and opera houses in Nürnberg, Dresden, Dortmund, and Halle, and universities with a focus on opera research in Vienna, Bologna, Bern, Poznań, and Southampton. Language of instruction: German; no admission restrictions.

    Programme Coordinator Prof. Dr. Anno Mungen, Phone: +49 (0) 9228 / 99605-10, E-mail: anno.mungen@uni-bayreuth.de

    Responsibility, Leadership and Communication (MBA)
The programme strengthens the competencies of future managers or those already in positions of responsibility, from a wide variety of fields, ranging from medicine, to politics, to the private sector. After completing their studies, graduates will be able to fulfil comprehensively both their responsibility for efficiency in the context of corporate management, and their human responsibility in the area of personnel management when achieving organisational goals. Participants are prepared for the diverse challenges of management in everyday practice. Typical future employers include national and international companies, as well as public institutions such as hospitals. Language of instruction: German, English; no admission restrictions; part-time study possible.
