Alexander von Humboldt Professorships for Artificial Intelligence coming

Lisa Purzitza Pressereferat
Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung

Up to 30 professorships to be awarded as a contribution to the German government’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

Up to 30 additional Alexander von Humboldt Professorships in the field of Artificial Intelligence are to be filled in the years up to 2024. Through these professorships, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation intends to contribute to the German government’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy which targets the establishment of new AI chairs in Germany.

Alexander von Humboldt Professorships are financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The award comes with €5 million in funding for individuals conducting experimental research and €3.5 million for researchers working in theoretical fields. The award brings top international researchers from abroad to German universities and offers them long-term prospects for conducting research in Germany. The Humboldt Professorship enables German universities to offer top international researchers competitive conditions for research and to raise their own international profiles in the global research market at the same time. To date, it has been possible to award up to ten Humboldt Professorships every year. Now, six additional Humboldt Professors specifically for the field of Artificial Intelligence can be recruited to come to Germany. Nominations are being accepted with immediate effect.

“Research into artificial intelligence delves into questions that can be answered not only on a technical level. We must also focus on the societal, legal and ethical dimensions”, said Hans-Christian Pape, President of the Humboldt Foundation. “The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Professorship will support efforts being made to extensively explore and harness the opportunities AI offers for our future. This professorship will help strengthen Germany as an internationally attractive and influential location in this important field”, Pape noted. Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek announced the establishment of the new AI chairs during the award ceremony for this year’s Humboldt Professorships in May.
The additional professorships will be awarded to internationally leading researchers from various disciplines who conduct research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, such as Machine Learning, Robotics and Pattern Analysis as well as in fields such as Computer Linguistics, Ethics, and Philosophy. As in the past, up to ten professorships will continue to be open to candidates from any discipline.
