    Innovations for a sustainable forestry
The Baden-Württemberg company Hohenloher Spezial Maschinenbau GmbH & Co KG located in Neukupfer, Hohenlohe and the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering of the Transilvania University of Braşov, Romania have presented the second prototype of their forwarder and won the prize for the “Product of the Year” at the Forest Romania Fair.

The prototype has been developed within the European project Forwarder2020, which received 2 million euro European funding for three years.

The Forest Romania Fair took place from 5th to 7th of September, at Zizin, Brasov County, Romania. Highlight of the fair was the competition “Product of the Year” which aimed to award three innovative products characterized by the greatest potential to significantly change the national and international forest sector. Forwarder2020 prototype took part in this competition, to which subscribed many companies. It is an honour to announce that Forwarder2020 prototype - HSM 208F 14t HVT-R2 - won one of the three prices as Product of the Year!

This prototype has previously been tested in the mountainous Romanian forests under harsh operational conditions. During the fair, the prototype has attracted a lot of attention from the part of timber harvesting companies whose representatives had the opportunity to visualize the main innovations integrated into the machine such as the transmission system and the modified cabin.

Considering both, the prize granted based on the performance and innovation character of the prototype, as well as the results of the field tests carried on in the Romanian conditions, the initial hypotheses of the FORWARDER2020 consortium were validated and acknowledged by representatives of the forest supply chain. These hypotheses were related to the possibility to increase the operational efficiency in terms of speed and productivity as well as in terms of environmental impact and operational costs.

    Innovative technologies

Forwarders are of special interest for sustainable forestry because they have the largest wheel load and the least impact on soil compaction. Moreover, these machines have to overcome long hauling distances between the felling site and the forest road. In order to protect the forest soil and to improve energy-efficient operations, the Hohenloher Spezial Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG together with 13 European partners have developed a forwarder with five innovative modules.

The awarded prototype contains three of the five innovations: the hydrostatic-mechanic power split transmission, a hydro pneumatic suspension and an innovative monitoring system for the documentation of the process data.

Two other innovations have been developed within the project and concern the hybrid hydraulic system to power the loading crane with energy recovery and a rear triple-bogie axle. These innovations have been demonstrated in a first prototype.

Final Conference will present both prototypes

On 26th of September 2019 the final conference will take place in Waldenburg-Laurach in Hohenlohe. At the end of the project both prototypes will be presented. The participants will get an insight into the exploitation of the project results and the functioning of the project´s innovations. Participants will have the opportunity to get in contact directly with the project partners for further information.

    Project summary
Forwarder2020 is a Horizon 2020 innovation project with the aim of improving the sustainability of wood production and delivery as well as operational forest management and planning. Within the project innovations for more efficient forwarders, essential wood extraction and transportation vehicles, will be developed and tested in real conditions.
With a total budget of almost 3M€ (2 M€ funding) 14 European partners from industry and research will work on five innovative modules for forwarders aiming at improving efficiency of the machine, reducing the fuel consumption and minimizing the impact on the environment and on the operators’ health. Over the course of three years (2016-2019) the Forwarder2020 partners gathered their expertise to advance diverse technologies, which contributed to smart and sustainable logging operations using innovative forestry machines. All in all the five innovative modules will be integrated into two prototypes which will be tested in Scotland, Lithuania and Romania.
