Island of Borkum goes ahead with decarbonisation

Island of Borkum goes ahead with decarbonisation through smart energy management and local flexibility options. Since October 2020 a consortium of eleven European partners, among them Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum, is supporting the island with measures of decarbonisation under the umbrella of the European project ISLANDER.

The German island of Borkum has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming emission-free by 2030. Since October 2020 a consortium of eleven European partners, among them Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum, is supporting the island with measures of decarbonisation under the umbrella of the European project ISLANDER. Borkum is currently working on solutions for hydrogen production and storage within the Interreg project H2WATT. The ISLANDER project now focuses on a roadmap for a complete decarbonisation of the island.

The virtual kick-off meeting held on October 29th and 30th brought together a total of 25 project partners representing the 11 organisations from 7 European countries. During the kick-off meeting the partners discussed and set up an action plan for the next months.

ISLANDER will run for the next four years, ending in September 2024. The project strongly builds on the NETfficient project (2015-2019), which developed an energy platform that integrates different storage technologies and renewable energy sources.

ISLANDER aims at developing an even more integrated and efficient central energy management platform in order to manage the various energy assets and balance fluctuations between generation and demand, using local flexibility options such as storage technologies and demand response in combination with renewable energy sources. In addition, an innovative concept for heat supply based on a seawater-powered heat pump and a heat storage tank will be installed in a newly built district close to the port of Borkum.

A large hydrogen-based storage will also be deployed. Moreover, a Renewable Energy Community will be created in order to engage the citizens of Borkum and strengthen their participation in the island’s energy transition. These measures will set the course for the creation of a largely carbon-free energy system on the island of Borkum by 2030.

Further, ISLANDER aims to replicate its results to the widest possible adopters. To do so, the project entails a 3-wave replication strategy along with the dissemination measures required to support it:

    - Replication in Followed Islands in Great Britain, Greece, and Croatia
    - Replication in the related archipelagos
    - Replication in other EU islands by means of the cooperation with the European Islands initiatives.

ISLANDER has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 957669. The European Commission is co-funding the project with nearly € 7 million.
The project consortium: AYESA Advanced Technologies SA (project coordinator),Spain, IDENER Research & Development, Spain, Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum der Steinbeis Innovation gGmbH, Germany, Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH, Germany, ZIGOR Research and Development AIE, Spain, CEGASA Energia S.L.U., Spain, Planète OUI, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), the Network of Sustainable Greek Islands (DAFNI), Greece and Regionalna Energetska Agencija Kvarner, Croatia.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
