Die europäische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Academia Europea, hat Reinhard Wilhelm, Professor für Programmiersprachen der Universität des Saarlandes, und Peter Druschel, Gründungsdirektor des Max-Planck-Instituts für Softwaresysteme, als neue Mitglieder aufgenommen. Diese Ehre teilen sie mit rund 2000 Wissenschaftlern aus 35 europäischen und acht nicht-europäischen Ländern. Die Mitglieder sind führende Experten aus der Physik, Biologie, Medizin, Informatik und Mathematik, den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften sowie der Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaft. Ziel der 1988 gegründeten Academia Europea ist es, Bildung und Forschung in Europa zu fördern und den interdisziplinären und internationalen Austausch in der Wissenschaft zu stärken.
In der Sektion Informatik ist die Saarbrücker Informatikforschung so stark wie kein anderer europäischer Standort vertreten, da auch Wolfgang Paul, Professor für Rechnerarchitektur der Universität des Saarlandes, und Kurt Mehlhorn, Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik, Mitglieder der Academia Europea sind.
