Professor Frank Allgöwer re-elected as Vice-President of the German Research Foundation
Professor Dr.-Ing. Frank Allgöwer, Director of the Institute of System Theory and Control Technology at the University of Stuttgart, was re-elected as Vice-President on 1st July 2015 in the course of the annual general meeting of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bochum. The international top researcher and bearer of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, touted as the “German Nobel Prize”, is therefore a member of Germany’s central research funding organisation for a second term of office. As a managing body the DFG presidium continuously provides advice in all matters of essential significance for the self-governing organisation of science in Germany.
After his re-election in Bochum Professor Frank Allgöwer said: “In the past three years it has been a particular pleasure for me to be able to contribute to the work performed by DFG in the presidium leading to a successful organisation of the scientific location of Germany. It is for this reason that I look forward to a further period in office as DFG Vice-President. In future I would also like to introduce the perspective of engineering sciences to the committee and dedicate myself in particular to the interdisciplinary cooperation among researchers from the various science cultures.“
With a view to the re-election Professor Wolfram Ressel, Rector of the University of Stuttgart, described the national and international commitment by Frank Allgöwer to research and teaching as exemplary and underlined: “In his second term in office Professor Allgöwer will also enrich the work of the German Research Foundation in the presidium with his creativity and experience and consolidate the connections between the universities and the German Research Foundation.“
Frank Allgöwer, born in 1962 in Heilbronn, studied Technical Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart and Applied Mathematics at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated in 1996 with his doctorate (with distinction) at the University of Stuttgart. Whilst doing his doctorate as a research associate at the Institute of System Dynamics and Control Technology at the University of Stuttgart the former scholarship holder funded by the German National Academic Foundation, the Foreign Office and the Fulbright Foundation, he established a research group related to questions of non-linear control. Even in his early years he received offers from the University of California and the ETH Zurich. In 1999 the University of Stuttgart succeeded in recruiting Frank Allgöwer to manage the newly founded Institute of the System Theory of Technical Processes. Frank Allgöwer has received numerous awards, such as the state award for teaching from the Baden Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Art for his didactically exemplary lectures. The University of Stuttgart recently honoured him on Science Day on 30th June 2012 as a prize-winner in the competition “Mind meets Machine“, with which the University of Stuttgart funds the interlinking of engineering and natural sciences with the humanities.
As the full-time President of the DFG Peter Strohschneider, Professor for German Medieval Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, was likewise re-elected for a second term in office in the course of the annual general meeting in Bochum.
