2015 DAAD Prize for Australian MBA Student at HHL

MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Australian Todd Andrews, 38, recently celebrated his graduation from Germany's first business school. During the past twelve months, he completed an MBA program at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. For his outstanding academic performance he has now received the DAAD Prize from Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD) which comes with a monetary reward of EUR 1,000. Only 200 of presently more than 200,000 international students were selected for this award.
Todd Andrews talks about his experience at HHL in this interview.

_What was your job before you came to HHL?

Before enrolling for the MBA program in Leipzig, I worked in the financial sector in Australia, the UK and Hong Kong. Thanks to my Bachelor's degree in Poetry I already had a broad general knowledge which helped me in analyzing financial data and facts. While still in Australia, I set up a company together with partners in the financial sector.

_Why did you decide to study management in Germany? Why did you ultimately choose HHL?

My wife is from Germany, a place near Leipzig. We decided to move here because of our family plans. With an MBA from HHL I would now like to obtain a reputable higher academic degree and consequently a level of security for my career in case my professional independence should fail. I started to consider HHL because of the Financial Times rankings. I also spoke to several people in Germany who attested to the quality and reputation of HHL.

_Which classes at HHL did you enjoy in particular?

Although I have worked in the industry, I was lacking the profound insight into the theoretical models of finance. Therefore, I found this class particularly interesting and valuable. The same applies to the economics class. Our German teacher at HHL has been amazing. Andreas Hellfayer is one of the best trainers I have ever seen. What is more; before the MBA I was always confident enough to consider myself to be among the 'rising part of society'. In Germany and also in the internationally diverse MBA class at HHL, I felt like a 'foreigner' and 'cultural minority' for the first time. In this context, I personally benefited greatly from the soft skill classes with Jun.-Prof. Tobias Dauth.

_How did you fund your studies at HHL?

I funded my tuition fees partially through HHL's Global Scholars program and partially through personal sources.

_What are your plans for the time after your graduation?

I am currently applying for an internship at a major international agricultural and food company in Switzerland. Later, maybe in ten years time, I would like to establish a second foothold in agriculture, possibly in Hungary or Romania.

The Master Program in General Management (MBA) at HHL

The MBA program offered by HHL, which is taught in English, is considered one of the best independently developed programs of this kind in Germany. The proportion of international students in this 15 to 21-month HHL program is approximately 80 percent, an outstanding figure in the global comparison of full-time MBA programs. Since its introduction in the year 2000, the full-time MBA program has focused on teaching management and leadership skills in a global context. This is supported by an innovative curriculum and 28 lecturers from seven different countries. They provide students with an insight into the latest scientific management approaches in a global context. The practical relation is ensured by teaching content with practical relevance including case studies, a field project accompanying the program or an optional internship abroad. International Management is not only taught but also integrated into everyday life at HHL thanks to the international background of the students and professors. The international cross-linking of the program is denoted by substantial cooperation with universities abroad. From Australia to the U.S. – HHL has more than 110 partner universities worldwide. The students have the opportunity to spend a term at one of these partner universities. The intensive and professional counseling for students from initial contact to the alumni network has to be emphasized. A Career Service accompanies students from the day they are admitted to the program until the successful conclusion of a job search. Further information: http://www.hhl.de/mba
