Working together to develop strategies against infectious diseases

Karola Neubert Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Deutsches Zentrum für Infektionsforschung

Around 400 scientists in the field of infection research are holding a conference in Bad Nauheim from 21 to 23 November 2019.

We previously thought we had conquered infectious diseases. Now they are once again one of the most common causes of death all over the world. It has since become clear that the increase in antibiotic resistance and the lack of new active ingredients can only be counteracted by increased efforts on an international level. Doctors and scientists from the German Society of Infectious Diseases (DGI) and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) are focusing on these global challenges during the annual conference that they are hosting together.

The DGI and DZIF are combining innovative research approaches with new patient care options on their programme. The conference thus provides an integrative and unique insight into the status of infectiology in Germany. During the symposiums, lectures, workshops and poster sessions, both experts in their respective fields of research and up-and-coming scientists will have their say. Programme highlights, such as the “Young Infectiologists” science slam, the award ceremony for the “Meta-Alexander-Preis” (DGI) and the DZIF prizes for translational infection research, demonstrate how important both institutions are in supporting young talent.

‘With its 35 member organisations and numerous partner institutions, the DZIF already holds an outstanding position on a global basis now and can be proud of its successes in the development of innovative active ingredients’, underlines Professor Hans-Georg Kräusslich, Chairman of the Board at the DZIF. At the same time, the global increase in antibiotic resistance is considered to be a major and alarming challenge for society as a whole.

The rapid development of new medications depends primarily on researchers and hospitals working together closely on a global basis: ‘The conference hosted together with the DZIF enables us to communicate new research findings to doctors working in clinical fields and therefore makes it possible to implement these findings rapidly for patient care’, says Professor Gerd Fätkenheuer, Chairman of the Board at the DGI. Both the DGI and the DZIF have stated an intention to go to great effort to continue to develop the field of infectiology.

We would like to extend a warm invitation to the conference to all journalists who are interested in attending the event. The event provides an opportunity for infection research scientists from all over Germany to get together for discussions. The specialist lectures will be held in English. Some events on the programme will be held in German.

Please contact presse@dzif.de if you would like to attend the conference. We would be happy to put you in touch with interview partners for your questions; please send us your interview requests by 18 November 2019 by email where possible.

At the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), about 500 scientists and physicians from 35 institutions nationwide jointly develop new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Their aim is to translate research results into clinical practice rapidly and effectively. With this, the DZIF paves the way for developing new vaccines, diagnostics and drugs in the fight against infections. Further information at: www.dzif.de.

The German Society of Infectious Diseases (DGI) is the specialist scientific society which represents the field of infection research in human medicine in clinical contexts, practice and research. It considers itself to be a field that is primarily oriented towards clinical application but also underlines the interdisciplinary nature of the subject matter, as well as the relevance of infection medicine for public health and as a matter of international health.
