International regulations and nationals laws, personalised medicine and special requirements for drug approval: the demands on clinical research are constantly increasing, and with it, the demand for well-trained specialists. In autumn 2016, IUBH University of Applied Sciences started the Clinical Research Management distance learning degree programme in cooperation with PAREXEL International, one of world’s largest contract research institutes for clinical research. In six semesters, the MBA programme prepares students for management responsibilities in medical and pharmaceutical research. The first graduates are expected to finish starting in 2019.
Rapid change in drug development requires expertise
Clinical research managers are responsible for organising, coordinating and conducting clinical studies. They also maintain contact with external clients, various committees and official bodies. “It is an exciting career field because drug development is one of the most innovative and fast-changing industries. Here, international cooperation is as much in demand as expertise in the process of drug approval”, says IUBH programme director Dr Thomas Neunert.
Clinical research managers have a variety of career opportunities
The IUBH degree opens up many opportunities for a career in clinical research. “In addition to their expertise or coordinating tasks e.g. as project manager or research coordinator, there are also opportunities to enter middle or senior management, e.g. as head of a working group or department. In principle, there is also the option of free-lance consulting”, explains Dagmar McCaughey, Global Head of Parexel Academy. Many firms support internal or external training in this area because there is a need to stay up to date.
This is how Andrei Ivanov came to IUBH in early 2017: “For me, the decision to study clinical research management was the next logical step in my career – after all, I have a medical background and have been working in clinical research since 2003. I have also been in project management for seven years and want to expand my knowledge and skills in this area as well.”
The job concurrent degree programme can be flexibly integrated into everyday working life
The job concurrent English language degree programme can be completed, for the most part online, in six semesters. It provides in-depth knowledge of clinical research, business and intercultural competence. The online modules are complemented by five classroom seminars in Berlin, in which industry experts from PAREXEL International and IUBH lecturers impart practical skills in the field of medical and pharmaceutical research. Exams can be taken at Goethe Institutes worldwide or completed entirely online. It is possible to start the programme at any time.
