Petra Giegerich Kommunikation und Presse
Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

The EU funded project "Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies" (ReIReS) offers scholars the opportunity to spend two weeks in one of fourteen outstanding European research centers (libraries and archives) to carry out research in Historical Religious Studies. Application deadline: 17 February 2019.

The EU funded project "Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies" (ReIReS) offers scholars the opportunity to spend two weeks in one of fourteen outstanding European research centers (libraries and archives) in Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, and Italy to carry out their research project in Historical Religious Studies. Application deadline: 17 February 2019.

ReIReS grants to users support for travel (standard economy airfare) and subsistence (accommodation). Users spend typically two weeks at the provider institution, meeting experts and scholars, the curator of the special collections, conservators, and restorers. Users of ReIReS transnational access take advantage in dealing with all these materials with the constant tutorial of experts of the host provider who are specialists in the research field for which access has been requested and who assist and guide the use and interpretation of the data.

This call is part of the ReIReS program "Transnational access to special collections and archival documents," which is organised by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and KU Leuven. It gives access to the collections of fourteen libraries and archives, which offer their physical holdings as well as their analytical and technical data. The sources available include all kinds of material about the history of Christianity in Europe and also some of the most relevant collections of Jewish and Muslim documents and books, granting the effective possibility of attracting the attention of new users as well as public interest, particularly for studies concerning interreligious and interconfessional dialog throughout history.

In Mainz, the library of the JGU Department of Theology including the Jewish Library, which contains the remains of the former Jewish congregations of Mainz, the Hymnbook Archive of Mainz University, the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek, and the Martinus-Bibliothek are part of the research infrastructure of the project and make the historic book treasures of city, church, and university accessible for scholars from all over Europe.

ReIReS is a starting community of twelve European institutions that are building a unique and highly qualified infrastructure of religious studies. ReIReS brings knowledge into the field of religious pluralism in Europe, thus contributing to a stable society. It explains and implements the idea that "Knowledge Creates Understanding". The ReIReS initiative started in February 2018 and will run for three years. It has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 program under grant agreement No. 730895.
