Talent factory for biomedical research

Dr. Uta von der Gönna Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Universitätsklinikum Jena

The Medical Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena has been offering the English-language Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine for ten years. More than a third of the hitherto 235 graduates do research in Jena. For the first time, a student will start for an exchange year at the partner University of Montreal in winter term 2020.

From the beginning, the research-oriented master course in molecular medicine has been a success story: It was conceived as a consecutive program following a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and educating for work in biomedical research. Already in the first year of enrollment in 2009, the team has received 72 applications for around 30 places. “Now, we can elect from an average of 500 applications per year. More than a quarter of the students who start a master's degree with us come from abroad,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. Reinhard Bauer from the examination board of the course.

Teaching in English, the four-semester course impart extensive fundamental knowledge on medical theory, and, based on this, offers a broad spectrum of special subjects to get acquainted with state-of-the-art molecular biological techniques for basic and applied medical research. "This concept of a sophisticated research-oriented curriculum works out in two ways“, says Prof. Dr. Carsten Hoffmann. "The program is good to be studied, 98% of our students successfully complete it," says the head of the master course. "And more than a third of the graduates stayed in Jena to do a doctorate." Another special feature: As a gift for talent, medical students and physicians can acquire the master's degree in a specially designed one-year additional study. This opens them up new career paths in clinical research.

A cooperation with the University of Montreal in Canada now makes the course even more attractive. It enables the exchange with the master course Molecular and Cellular Medicine. The participants, who have to apply for one of seven scholarships advertised worldwide, can thus achieve both the German and the Canadian master's degree. Due to corona crisis, only one foreign applicant was admitted this year: Patrick Penndorf, second semester student of the Master course in Molecular Medicine in Jena, successfully passed the highly competitive selection procedure and will leave for the exchange year in Canada in September.

Application deadline for the Master's program in Molecular Medicine starting in winter semester 2020 is May 31st.
