Mathijs van Leeuwen and Lotje de Vries will talk about land disputes and tenure insecurity of locals, displaced people, and returning refugees in conflict-affected settings. They explore the particularities of claim making to land, as well as efforts by government and international organizations to deal with these issues. Their presentation will reflect on how both, local claims and interventions resonate with ongoing contestations about identity, citizenship, and state authority. The presentations build on experiences from the research programs 'Grounding Land Governance' (2011-2016) and 'Looking through the Lens of Land' (2014-16), which explored the dynamics of land governance reform in Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan and eastern DR Congo.
Mathijs van Leeuwen is Assistant Professor at the Centre for International Conflict Analysis and Management (CICAM) at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He is a rural development sociologist, who specializes in conflict and peace building in developing countries. Currently, his research activities focus on land conflict and reform, local governance and state formation, and local reconciliation after conflict, mainly in the African Great Lakes region.
Lotje de Vries is Assistant Professor at the Sociology of Development and Change Group of Wageningen University. She has a background in development sociology. Her current research focuses on local dynamics of (in)security, transnational security governance in peripheries and at borders, and state-society relations in (post-) conflict settings. She works mostly in South Sudan and the Central African Republic.
The talk on 30 March 2017 is organized in BICC’s Brown Bag Lecture Series “Displacement and Development” which aims to interlink conflict and displacement studies on the one hand and development respectively humanitarian aid-oriented analyses on the other.
