Conflict, Migration, and Displacement: 17th Annual Workshop of the Households in Conflict Network

The complex nexus of forced migration, development, and security is central to the analysis of household welfare. Any empirical analysis of the link between conflict and forced migration faces issues due to endogeneity, generalizability, or data quality. The workshop thus aims at discussing creative and innovative approaches that allow dealing with the above issues to provide evidence, which can be used to benefit a non-negligible share of the world population.

We are inviting submissions of (preferably) full papers or extended abstracts by May 31, 2021 (23:59 CET) to hicn2021@uni-goettingen.de. Authors will be informed about the final paper selection by June 30, 2021. Authors submitting extended abstracts will need to submit full papers by September 15, 2021. As in previous years, we also welcome creative and innovative papers analyzing violent conflict that do not directly address the annual theme. We are thus inviting papers on any topic within the empirical, micro-level analysis of the intersection of violent conflict and socio-economic development.

The keynote speaker is Mathias Thoenig, Professor of Economics at the School of Business and Economics at the University of Lausanne. In an open plenary session, which is jointly organized by the Centre for Global Migration Studies (CeMig) and the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), we will discuss “Migration and Security Policy” with – among others – Ruben Andersson (Oxford University), Mercy Fekadu (Institute for Peace and Security Studies), and Michael Owiso (Maseno University), followed by moderated discussions in smaller groups.

Local Organizer: Sarah Langlotz
Local Co-Organizers and Local Committee: Andreas Fuchs, Marcela Ibanez, Lennart Kaplan, Krisztina Kis-Katos
Co-Organizers of Plenary: Sabine Hess, Jelka Günther, Lennart Kaplan, Jana Kuhnt
HiCN Directors: Tilman Brück, Patricia Justino, Philip Verwimp

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
