From the 2013/14 winter semester, Dr. med.vet. Jörg Junhold, Director of Zoo Leipzig, will be lecturing at Leipzig University as an honorary professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The President of the World Federation of Zoos and Aquariums will be devoting himself to the fields of zoo animal husbandry and species conservation. Himself a graduate of Leipzig's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Junhold will receive his accreditation certificate from Prof. Beate Schücking, Rector of Leipzig University, at an inauguration ceremony.

"With the appointment of Dr. Jörg Junhold as an honorary professor, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is creating a close connection between the university and a highly successful zoo director and well-respected personality in the city," states Prof. Uwe Truyen, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, adding: "His professional expertise will reinforce us in the fields of zoo animal husbandry and species conservation, and will open up a range of innovative research directions." According to Prof. Truyen, the faculty's teaching in the fields of zoo animal husbandry, species conservation and zoo animal medicine is to be intensified in future, enabling Leipzig's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to establish a strong reputation in these fields, both domestically and internationally.

"I really appreciate the University's confidence in me and the recognition of my work which this professorship represents. At the same time I would like to express my thanks to all the sponsors, patrons and staff of Zoo Leipzig for the valuable support they have given me in everything I have done," states Dr. Junhold, adding: "The connection between the faculty and the zoo has been tried and tested for decades and I will do everything in my power to ensure that future generations are prepared for the challenges presented by a zoo in the 21st century and come to know the importance and possibilities of species conservation for maintaining biodiversity." In addition, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine will in future be able to participate as a partner in numerous research projects in the field of species conservation which Zoo Leipzig is working on.

The study of veterinary medicine at Leipzig University has always involved numerous lectures given by the Director of Zoo Leipzig, for example on the subject of zoo animal diseases. "Such lectures are vital for the faculty, as are the many hours spent training at the zoo, which take place during a course of study in the form of internships or courses and in relation to postgraduate dissertations," confirms Prof. Truyen.

Dr. Junhold has conceived Zoo Leipzig as a 'zoo of the future', in which animals live in an environment which is close to their natural habitat and divided up on a continental theme, and where the focus is very much on species conservation. This approach has led to his involvement in the work of a number of international bodies, including the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and National Resourses (IUCN), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the International Species Information System (ISIS), the Federation of German Zoo Directors (VDZ) , and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). In recognition of his services he was appointed President of WAZA for the period 2011 to 2013.

Dr. Junhold has been director of the Zoological Garden of Leipzig and Managing Director of Zoo Leipzig GmbH since November 1997. He studied veterinary medicine in Leipzig from 1985 to 1990 and, as a research fellow at the faculty, completed his doctorate summa cum laude in 1994. After several years spent in the management of an animal feed company he took over the reins at Zoo Leipzig, developing the institution in the years which followed into one of the world's leading zoological gardens.
