Over the next twelve months, Japanese Dr. Akira Shibata, PhD, will examine the theory of German business ethics at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. The Nagoya-born associate professor from Kagawa University on the Japanese peninsula of Shikoku was awarded a scholarship by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for his research residence in Leipzig.
In addition to the history of German business administration, the 36-year-old researcher is particularly interested in the theory of German business ethics, especially HHL lecturer Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek's approach. "Thanks to personal contact with business ethics specialist Prof. Dr. Suchanek from three years ago, a vivid exchange of views has developed which I would like to intensify during my time at HHL," says Dr. Shibata. The Japanese guest researchers finds the orientation of theory, methodology and institutions of business ethics in Germany particularly exciting. Dr. Shibata explains, "Research of business ethics in Japan is often based on American influences. In my opinion, however, we can learn a lot from the German approach."
The dialog between theory and practice on corporate social responsibility is at the center of the work at the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business Ethics. Chairholder Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek considers the Golden Rule, reformulated with regard to economics, as the core of understanding economic and business ethics. It says: invest in the conditions of societal cooperation for mutual benefit. It is nothing other than the globally valid norm of "You should treat others as you would like others to treat yourself."
HHL professor Suchanek, who is also a Member of the Board of the Wittenberg Center of Global Ethics, comments, "It is a great joy and honor to HHL and myself to have Dr. Shibata come to us to enter into an exchange between his own research and ours. It is well known that German business administration, mainly molded by Eugen Schmalenbach – and over the last few decades by other personalities such as Horst Albach, Heribert Meffert, Ralf Reichwald and others closely associated with HHL – enjoys a great reputation and is widely received. Dr. Shibata's visit offers an opportunity to further develop important fundamental theories for sustainable, responsible and entrepreneurial leadership with a holistic orientation and its application in various cultures.
