University of Bayreuth among the world's top young universities

Christian Wißler Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth is in the top group of the "Nature Index 2019 Young Universities". This recently published global ranking lists universities and research institutions younger than 50 years of age according to their share of publications in cutting-edge scientific research. In the ranking of the world's 175 best young universities, the University of Bayreuth was placed 21st. This puts it in second spot among young universities in Germany.

The breakdown by subject group shows that the University of Bayreuth is one of the world's leading young institutions in “Earth & environmental sciences”. Here it achieved seventh place out of a total of 25 listed institutions. Meanwhile, in the worldwide ranking for “chemistry”, the University of Bayreuth is the best young university in Germany; and in the "physical sciences", it finished second nationally. In a global comparison, it ranks among the top 30 in these subject groups.

"These results impressively demonstrate the outstanding achievements and international profile of the University of Bayreuth in central fields of scientific research. As a young university, we are playing in the international 'Champions League', due to the way we network our research competence in interdisciplinary focus areas, and cooperate with top-class research partners worldwide," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth.

The "Nature Index 2019 Young Universities" is based on the "Nature Index 2019” published in June 2019. The ranking lists 500 universities, research institutes, and non-academic institutions, which in 2018 contributed the largest share of publications in 82 leading scientific journals. A new ranking procedure was applied for the first time in 2019. For each institution, the number of top publications is related to the total number of publications as they appear in the “Dimensions” database of Digital Science. As a result of this weighting, the research performance of smaller universities is more prominent than in the earlier 'absolute' rankings in Nature Index.
