Web relaunch: Microbes and cell cultures now fresh on the Internet

Dr. Manuela Schüngel Stabsstelle Presse und Kommunikation
Leibniz-Institut DSMZ-Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ presents its new website

(Braunschweig - July 3, 2019): Since June 24, 2019, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures has a new website. The internet presence of the institute in English has been optically, contentwise and functionally optimized. In the coming months, the most important sections will also be available in German. Editorial support and relaunch planning were carried out by Sven-David Müller, Head of the DSMZ Press and Communication Unit, and Dr. Manuela Schüngel, Press and Public Relations Officer. Daniel Rinninsland, EPR Inhouse Consultant at DSMZ IT & Databases, was responsible for technical coordination.

Relaunch with Fishfarm netsolutions, Studio GOOD and Gärtner Datensystemen
The multidisciplinary design agency Studio GOOD GbR in Berlin developed the graphic concept for the website, which is currently running with the most modern Typo3 version. The technical implementation was carried out by the Braunschweig-based full-service agency for internet services, fishfarm netsolutions GmbH. Furthermore, Gärtner Datensysteme GmbH & Co. KG from Braunschweig hosts the website of DSMZ. Last year, 268,486 unique users visited the DSMZ website and visited the web pages of the Leibniz Institute DSMZ almost three million times.

Microbes and cell cultures for the world
The DSMZ is the largest and one of the largest collections of bioresources in the world. In addition to an active collection and provision of microorganisms and cell cultures, the Leibniz Institute's range of tasks also includes various research areas. Last year, DSMZ received 43,327 microbial and cell culture orders from around 10,000 customers in 81 countries. A share of 71.6 % of international orders underlines the global importance of the DSMZ in the life sciences. The Federal State of Lower Saxony bears the Leibniz Institute DSMZ, which is financed by the Federal Government and the Federal States. The DSMZ is recognized as a non-profit organization and was founded in 1969 at the University of Göttingen. Since 1987, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ has been based on the Science Campus Braunschweig-Süd. The DSMZ employs about 200 people.

    About the Leibniz Institute DSMZ
The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures is the world's most diverse collection of biological resources (bacteria, archaea, protists, yeasts, fungi, bacteriophages, plant viruses, genomic bacterial DNA as well as human and animal cell lines). Microorganisms and cell cultures are collected, investigated and archived at the DSMZ. As an institution of the Leibniz Association, the DSMZ with its extensive scientific services and biological resources has been a global partner for research, science and industry since 1969. The DSMZ is the first registered collection in Europe (Regulation (EU) No. 511/2014) and certified according to the quality standard ISO 9001:2015. As a patent depository, it offers the only possibility in Germany to deposit biological material in accordance with the requirements of the Budapest Treaty. In addition to scientific services, research is the second pillar of the DSMZ. The institute, located on the Science Campus Braunschweig-Süd, accommodates more than 71,000 cultures and biomaterials and has 198 employees. www.dsmz.de

    The Leibniz Association
The Leibniz Association connects 95 independent research institutions that range in focus from the natural, engineering and environmental sciences via economics, spatial and social sciences to the humanities. Leibniz Institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance. They conduct knowledge-driven and applied basic research, maintain scientific infrastructure and provide research-based services. The Leibniz Association identifies focus areas for knowledge transfer to policy-makers, academia, business and the public. Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities – in the form of “Leibniz ScienceCampi” (thematic partnerships between university and non-university research institutes), for example – as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad. They are subject to an independent evaluation procedure that is unparalleled in its transparency. Due to the importance of the institutions for the country as a whole, they are funded jointly by the Federation and the Länder, employing some 19,100 individuals, including 9,900 researchers. The entire budget of all the institutes is approximately 1.9 billion Euros.
