Namibian scientists conduct research with collection of the Ethnological Museum - 23 objects from Berlin go to Windhoek for cooperation project - Collection networks with cultural heritage communities, artists and the public in Namibia

As part of a partnership between the Museums Association of Namibia (MAN) and the Ethnological Museum of the National Museums in Berlin, several researchers from Namibia have been guests in Berlin since spring 2019. Together with the researchers of the Ethnological Museum, they examined the more than 1400 objects from colonial contexts in Namibia in the museum's collection with regard to their history, significance and artistic potential and reactivated knowledge about them.

In consultation with community representatives in Namibia, 23 of these objects were selected for loan to the National Museum of Namibia. For the first time in Germany, such an open-ended cooperation process was initiated, which has been significantly determined by Namibian partners. With the support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the project "Confronting Colonial Pasts, Envisioning Creative Futures" has begun to intensify cooperation with Namibia. The inspirations offered by the objects in Berlin will flow into the Museum of Namibian Fashion planned by MAN. Other partners are the National Museum of Namibia and the University of Namibia.

We would like to present the first project results and some of the selected objects at a press conference.
