New Rector Elected at the University of Greifswald

    The University of Greifswald’s Academic Senate elected Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel as the new Rector of the University in the 2nd round of voting on 21 October 2020. Professor Riedel has already accepted the vote. Incumbent Rector Prof. Dr. Johanna Weber’s term of office will end on 31 March 2021. The investiture, the ceremony for handing over office, will also take place on this date.

    Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel studied biology at the Technical University of Munich and completed her doctorate at TU Munich’s Institute of Microbiology in 1998. She successfully completed her habilitation at the University of Zurich in 2006. Having been professor at the University of Braunschweig, she became Chair of Microbiology at the University of Greifswald in 2011. She has been Managing Director of the Institute since 2013. From 2016 to 2017, Professor Riedel was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and she has been Pro-Rector for Research and Transfer, International Affairs and Equal Opportunities since 2017. She is also currently the provisional Founding Director of the Helmholtz Institute in Greifswald.

    “I am delighted about the trust vested in me by this election and I will make every effort and devote a great deal of passion in the fulfilment of the mandate,” says Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel. The new Rector stands for participation, transparency and cooperation, she considers a respectful communication culture to be important. In this respect, she is planning to introduce a student Pro-Rector and to bring the University closer together, with University Medicine, external research institutes, and also the state’s other tertiary education institutions. Professor Riedel’s plans for her first year of office include the creation of a technology pool to improve the digital teaching conditions for both students and teaching staff, the streamlining of examination processes, and introduction of more incentives for individual and joint projects.

    The incumbent Pro-Rectors will end their term of office at the same time as the current Rector. The new Pro-Rectors will also be elected by the Senate at the beginning of next year. Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel is now Rector number 353 https://www.uni-greifswald.de/en/university/history/university-chronicle/rectors... at the University of Greifswald. She will remain Pro-Rector until her inauguration.
