IFW Dresden: Endowed CEOS professorship for electron optics appointed

Dr. Carola Langer Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung Dresden

The endowed professorship for electron optics (W2) financed by the company CEOS GmbH has been filled in a joint appointment procedure with TU Dresden and IFW Dresden. Prof. Axel Lubk will tok up the position on August 1, 2022 and will establish a laboratory for next generation transmission electron microscopy at IFW Dresden.

Characterization methods play a central role in modern solid-state physics and materials science. Often, it was the development of new experimental analytical methods that led to a change in the understanding and development of new materials. Electron microscopy is one of the most important analytical methods in which objects become visible by means of electron beams. The science location Dresden played an important role in the development of this technique at an early stage, dating back to the work of Manfred v. Ardenne and Alfred Recknagel. The current developments in electron optics and electron microscopy, which are significantly advanced at the TU Dresden and IFW Dresden, lie in the combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). These activities are embedded and driven by the large natural science research focus on solid state physics, chemistry and material sciences at the science location Dresden, represented e.g. by the cluster of excellence ct.qmat and several collaborative research centers at TU Dresden. Only recently, a Dresden research team led by Axel Lubk received the Outstanding Paper Award of the European Society for Microscopy for high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of magnetic nanovortices, so-called skyrmions.
Against this background, the new endowed professorship for electron optics at TU Dresden and IFW Dresden offers enormous potential for the further development of both institutions in the field of method development of electron microscopy and further for the application of these techniques in theoretical solid-state physics, chemistry and materials science. The aim of the endowed professorship is the instrumental development of novel imaging and analytical methods of high-resolution electron microscopy.
The company CEOS GmbH researches, develops and produces sophisticated advanced optical components for electron microscopes. These include correctors aberrations as well as imaging energy filters, spectrometers and monochromators. Since its foundation in 1996, it has become the world's leading manufacturer of correctors for electron microscopes and has received several awards. CEOS is funding the endowed professorship for 5 years with a total of 1 million euros, with follow-up funding provided by IFW Dresden. With the endowment of the professorship, CEOS not only expects a significant boost for new methodological developments in electron microscopy, but also an improvement in the supply of specialists. Due to manifold applications of electron optics in an economic context, there is a very high demand for a well-founded academic education in this field. Therefore, a central task of the professorship is the development of practice-oriented courses at the TU Dresden.
Prof. Dr. Axel Lubk was appointed to the new endowed professorship for electron optics in the course of a joint appointment procedure between TU Dresden and IFW Dresden. The physicist, who holds a PhD, has made outstanding methodological contributions to electron microscopy, covering a broad spectrum of holography, tomography and spectroscopy. In 2016, he received an ERC Starting Grant and has since led a research group at IFW developing new tomographic TEM methods for the study of nanomaterials. A particular focus is on 3D imaging of atomic structures, including measurement of the resulting electric and magnetic fields, chemical composition, mechanical stress ratios, and spin configuration using electron holography.
