For the first time, descendants of victims of Nazi persecution and German public institutions join forces to explore the whereabouts of Nazi-confiscated art.
The collection of Berlin publisher, art collector, and philanthropist Rudolf Mosse (1843–1920) consisted of thousands of paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts, books and antiquities. The heirs of the German-Jewish publisher – one of the most influential figures of the Berlin business community during the German Empire and the beginning of the Weimar Republic – and researchers at Freie Universität will search for the art works expropriated by the National Socialists. The Mosse family, publishers of the Berliner Tageblatt, a leading progressive voice, were forced to flee Germany. This is an unprecedented public/private partnership for provenance research. Participants in the Mosse Art Research Initiative (MARI) are the Kulturstiftung der Länder, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, the Foundation of the Jewish Museum Berlin, the State Archives of Berlin (Landesarchiv), and numerous other institutions in Germany. The project is being funded by the German Center for Cultural Heritage in Magdeburg and the Mosse Art Restitution Project.
