Report presents trends, technologies and the challenges facing scientific libraries over the next five years
HANNOVER, 23 March 2017 – Focusing on research data management, improved access to libraries’ resources, and the use of big data technologies to create library services that are tailored more closely to users’ needs: these are just some of the 18 topics addressed in the third issue of the Library Edition of the Horizon Report. The report was officially presented today, on 23 March 2017, at the ACRL 2017 Conference in Baltimore (USA), and is now available for download: http://go.nmc.org/2017-arl
75 international experts were involved in selecting, discussing and assessing relevant topics for the NMC Horizon Report > 2017 Library Edition. The English-language report presents the trends, challenges and developments that scientific libraries may expect in the short, medium and long term. The report, which sees itself as a tool for developing and implementing strategies for change in libraries, also presents examples of international good practice.
“A new trend in the report that affects scientific libraries in several ways: online identity. On the one hand, the sharp increase in profile services such as ResearchGate has implications for aspects such as copyright and data protection. Both issues are already a subject of concern in many ways when conveying and cultivating information literacy in libraries,” explained Lambert Heller, Head of the Open Science Lab at the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology and co-project leader of the Library Edition of the Horizon Report. “On the other hand, there is ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), which offers a new, open approach to linking authors’ identities to articles and other research output. This development is a new challenge to libraries’ information infrastructures,” added Heller.
Following the successful launch of the Horizon Report > Library Edition in 2014, the New Media Consortium (NMC), ETH-Bibliothek − Library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, the University of Applied Sciences HTW Chur and the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology in Hannover also teamed up in 2015 to create the second report. The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) was taken on board as an additional partner, involved in the creation of the third issue. The two previous issues of the Horizon Report, published in 2014 and 2015, have been downloaded more than 1.8 million times.
About the NMC Horizon Report > Library Edition
The NMC Horizon Report > Library Edition identifies, describes and assesses trends, technologies and challenges facing scientific libraries over the next five years. The report is part of the internationally renowned series called Horizon Reports, published by the New Media Consortium (NMC) within the NMC Horizon Project. All Horizon Reports are published under a Creative Commons licence, enabling them to be used, disseminated and duplicated as easily as possible. A Library Edition was published in the series for the first time in 2014.
