Entrepreneurship as Weapon Against Africa’s Major Problems

Ethiopian Economics Professor Conducts Research at Germany’s Leading Entrepreneurial Business School

Ethiopian Associate Professor Dr. Abadi Teklehaimanot Gebremedhin joined HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management in April 2017 as a visiting researcher. He is being supported in his efforts by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Abadi has over 15 years of experience in the field of cooperative and rural development, ranging from a lecturer to the Associate Professor level at Ethiopia’s second largest university, the Mekelle University.

Currently, he is working in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Arnis Vilks, who holds the Chair of Microeconomics at HHL. Both scientists are developing a research project closely linked to some of Africa’s major problems: the rising population, the situation of young people, and the lack of opportunities in rural areas.
In this regard entrepreneurship could help to minimize poverty, reduce agricultural imbalance and promote export trade. In his practice oriented research, the African economist proposes a framework which focuses both on the entrepreneurial behavior/mindset of the individual as well as on the entrepreneurial environment (e.g. value orientation, marketing facilities, education and socioeconomic status). “With this proposition, we aim to provide self-employment to young men and women in Ethiopia,” says Abadi.

The Ethiopian economist shows a deep knowledge of entrepreneurship. During his tenure in Tigray/Ethiopia he established the Technical Vocational Education and Training Program, a strategy for small stakeholders’ entrepreneurship in agriculture and an institutional reform of the agricultural knowledge system.

Abadi holds a Ph.D. with specialization in Rural Development, Marketing and Livelihood Impact Analysis from IARI, New Delhi. He has served as the Dean for the College of Business and Economics at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. Today, he holds the Associate Professorship in Rural Development at Mekell University.
Abadi has published and presented more than 30 papers in reputable journals at national and international conferences, has written three text books and nine book chapters. The scientist has won best paper presentations at international conferences. He has attended various conferences and workshops in Israel, China, India, South Africa, Nigeria and The Netherlands. In the past years, Abadi guided 25 post graduate students and did extensive research and consulting work for several organizations in the area of local development, marketing, agri-preneurship, poverty reduction and investment. Abadi represented his country as a government delegate to China. He also introduced, with others, the farmer training center principle to Ethiopia.

HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management as a hotbed for entrepreneurs

With over 165 start-ups established by HHL alumni over the past 20 years, Germany's top address for young managers has also developed into an incubator for company creation. The founders' entrepreneurial commitment has created more than 3,000 jobs already. In 2013, 2014 and 2017, HHL reached one of three first places for the best entrepreneurial universities in Germany in the Start-Up Radar ranking published by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Founders' Association of German Science), Heinz Nixdorf Foundation and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi). According to the Financial Times, HHL ranks first in Germany and fifth globally for its entrepreneurship focus within the M.Sc. and EMBA programs. http://www.hhl.de/EntrepreneurialGraduateSchool
