BAM researches the safety of alternative fuels

M.A., LL.M./LL.B. Venio Quinque Unternehmenskommunikation
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

At the 2017 Hannover Fair, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) will be presenting their research into the safe use of liquid natural gas (LNG) in road transport. The BAM project ‘Safety of Transport Infrastructures’ (SiVi) in the focus area ‘Infrastructure’ also investigates how liquid gas behaves in different accident scenarios in tunnels. The aim is to minimise the risks of using alternative fuels and increase safety.

Berlin, 21.04.2017. Due to its high environmental compatibility, LNG is gaining in importance as a fuel, especially for heavy commercial vehicles. However, an increased use of LNG in road traffic also entails risks that have so far been unexplored.

Investigating accident scenarios in tunnels involving LNG

Researchers headed by Dr. Christian Knaust from the BAM Safety of Structures division are researching various scenarios of LNG spread in tunnels and into the potential consequences of such as a fire or explosion. The project team have built a full-scale tunnel test facility at the BAM Technical Safety Test Site at Horstwalde (BAM TTS) for the tests.

Dr. Christian Knaust’s team are working together with the Safety of Transport Containers and Constructive Fire and Explosion Safety BAM divisions to research into potential risks following accidents involving LNG vehicles on roads. In this way, the project can analyse various issues such as impacts on personal and structural safety and dangerous goods transport in tunnels.

Increasing the safety of tunnels and LNG vehicles

The research project aims to evaluate risk potential for the use of LNG and to develop relevant legislative recommendations for action. For example, new safety distances for LNG vehicles may be specified in order to increase safety.

    About BAM

BAM promotes safety in technology and chemistry.

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a senior scientific and technical federal authority responsible to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

BAM performs research, testing and offers advisory support to protect people, the environment and material goods. Its activity in the fields of materials science, materials engineering and chemistry is focussed on the technical safety of products and processes. BAM’s research is directed towards substances, materials, building elements, components and facilities as well as natural and technical systems important for the national economy and relevant to society. It also tests and assesses their safe handling and operation. BAM develops and validates analysis procedures and assessment methods, models and necessary standards and provides science-based services for the German industry in a European and international framework.

    Safety creates markets

BAM sets and represents high standards for safety in technology and chemistry for Germany and its global markets to further develop the successful German "Made in Germany“ quality brand.
