A symposium held at Hochschule Geisenheim University in honour of the late aroma researcher
On 26th April 2017, Hochschule Geisenheim University hosted the Denis Dubourdieu Symposium in honour of the aroma researcher Prof. Dr. Denis Dubourdieu, who died in 2016. Dubourdieu was co-founder of the Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin at Bordeaux University, a professor at Bordeaux University and renowned for his contribution to the detection of components in both white and red wines. During the course of his scientific career, one of Dubourdieu’s achievements was the identification of a completely new class of aromatic substances, the so-called thiols. These substances are tremendously important for varieties such as Sauvignon blanc, but also for others including Riesling.
At the symposium, scientists and associates of Dubourdieu from Italy, France and Australia gave talks on a range of topics including aroma precursors in grapes and wine, technologies for their measurement and the valorisation of wine quality through research on typicality and uniqueness. The symposium was chaired by the President of the Hochschule, Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, who referred to Dubourdieu's vision, which he shared with leading scientists from other institutions, of establishing an international institute. In 2013 this vision became reality. "The relationships which have been forged between Bordeaux, Adelaide and Geisenheim reflect the original idea of creating an institute which crosses national boundaries" said Schultz.
Representing the family, Fabrice Dubourdieu was awarded a prize of 10 000 Euros by the Rudolf Hermanns Stiftung in conjunction with Hochschule Geisenheim University in memory of Dubourdieu, for his outstanding scientific contributions in the field of aroma research. The prize money is to be used for the promotion of young scientists. In addition, Natalia Sapoukhina of INRA-Angers-Nantes, Institut de Recherche en Horticulture et Semences, Beaucouzé, France was awarded a prize of 2500 Euros by the Rudolf Hermanns Stiftung for her work entitled "MARCUS, MAnagement of Resistant CUltivarS".
