By becoming a member, TIB supports further development of current research information system VIVO
HANNOVER, 17 May 2017 – The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology became a member of DuraSpace in May 2017. The non-profit organisation DuraSpace promotes open source software with the aim of ensuring permanent access to digital data and information. DuraSpace, a member-funded establishment, works with academic, cultural and technology-based communities to support their projects and services. One such project is the current research information system VIVO. TIB’s Open Science Lab has been deeply involved with VIVO, and has implemented a German-language VIVO prototype (https://vivo.tib.eu/fis/). By being a member of DuraSpace, the library supports the further development of VIVO, maintained by DuraSpace, on a long-term basis.
“Without a lively community with good framework conditions, open source software is unable to develop. As a member, TIB would like to support this excellent community work and give VIVO a secure future,” stated Dr. Irina Sens, Interim Director of TIB. As a current research information system (CRIS), the open source software VIVO maps a research institution’s research activities – for example, publications, lectures, involvement in externally funded projects, and cooperative activities. In addition, researchers can present their interconnected profiles and research results on the internet in VIVO. VIVO is the most important open source alternative in the area of CRIS.
TIB is the first German institution to financially support VIVO via DuraSpace, and the second European institution after DTU, the Technical University of Denmark. “Besides providing financial support, TIB also plays a part in DuraSpace by participating in the VIVO committees ‘Internationalization Task Force’ and ‘Ontology Improvement Task Force’, among other things, meaning that we also play an active role in the further development of VIVO,” stated Christian Hauschke, VIVO Coordinator at TIB’s Open Science Lab.
