The protection of human rights is at the centre of the unique Masters programme in Governance and Human Rights at the Professional School of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Graduates of the programme are qualified to work in international organisations, the field of development assistance and non-governmental organisations. In October 2017, the English-instructed study programme will be offered for the third consecutive year and applications are now open.
The internationally orientated course is concerned with responsible government practices commonly termed ‘governance’ amongst social scientists. The focus of the programme is to convey governance principles with the aim of establishing and safeguarding human rights in the context of development assistance and cooperation. The four-semester study programme has a distance learning/ correspondence learning structure. The lectures and seminars mainly take place as e-learning units and the attendance phases are split up into three two week blocks. The flexible structure of the study programme also allows for the participation of foreign students, which contributes to a more diverse learning environment.
An important building block of the programme is the practical application of acquired knowledge. During their studies, students are required to develop their own project on the topic of human rights and governance. They also organise a conference on a topic of their own choice at the end of their studies.
Applications for a study place in the MA Governance and Human Rights programme are open until the 1st of July 2017. The study fees amount to 9,500 euros. In addition to the Leuphana Professional School, the Center on Governance through Human Rights of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform gGmbh and other partners also participate in the programme. The development of the course was financially supported by the Volkswagen Foundation.
