“Urban Space” pilot course for professionals

Six-month course in smart cities for professionals from industry and administration

What will urban spaces of the future look like? Smart cities represent a major challenge for public sector employees. With its “Urban Space” pilot course, Fraunhofer IAO has developed an innovative theoretical and practical training concept offering representatives from industry and administration ideal preparation for the cities of the future.

Public sector employees involved in planning public spaces are faced with many new challenges: ever more people are drawn to cities; expectations of safety, comfort, and efficiency of cities are continually rising; and the challenges to design cities that are "smart" and worth living in keep on mounting. This has led Fraunhofer IAO to develop a novel training concept, which provides experts from industry and administration with practical insights and effective measures for their daily work.

    Practical knowledge in focus

The part-time, six-month "Urban Space” smart society course for people in employment begins in September 2017 and is the first of its kind on the topic of smart cities. Course participants will gain insights into cross-sectoral issues such as social inclusion, environmental benefits and economic opportunities in smart cities, as well as into the associated technology. Topics include intelligent lighting systems, sensors in public spaces, environment-based solutions, and intelligent water infrastructure. The online modules are complemented by three “best-practice” trips to different cities, each lasting three days. The aim is to bring material from the course to life and demonstrate how the technology is employed. Practical experience is particularly important for Alanus von Radecki, Head of the Competence Team Urban Governance Innovation at Fraunhofer IAO: “We guarantee that participants will be better able to master their jobs after attending this course. That’s why we have a wide range of experts from the public and private sectors supplementing the expertise we have here at the Fraunhofer Institute.” Anyone interested in attending can register until July 15, 2017. The course fee is 7200 euros (without accommodation) and includes course material as well as meals, public transport, three best-practice trips and a unique modular and practical course program. The course will be held in English.

Summer school for master’s students in the Netherlands

The summer school from August 21 to 26, 2017 is for students wanting to work on solutions to urban challenges and to network with other local people involved in the area. The “Smart Society Summer School,” organized by Fraunhofer IAO and the Technical University of Eindhoven, is aimed specifically at master’s students from all countries and disciplines. The one-week course will be held in Eindhoven (course language English). The fee of 800 euros includes all associated expenses during the course. The registration deadline is June 15, 2017.
