Fraunhofer IAO and Malaysian research partner launch technology and market radar
What are the technology and market trends that will transform the Malaysian economy in the coming years? Together with its research partner SIRIM and the software provider ITONICS, Fraunhofer IAO has developed an IT-based trend radar for small and medium-sized enterprises.
As part of a study conducted over the past two years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO and the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia SIRIM have raised the standards of innovation management at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. The study showed that a major barrier to the success of SMEs was the lack of information on new technologies and developments available to them. To counter this, Fraunhofer IAO and SIRIM started a joint project in September 2016, aimed at establishing a technology and market radar (TMR) for Malaysian SMEs. The TMR will help SMEs identify key technology and market trends, in turn making it easier for them to take strategic decisions.
TMR Malaysia covers a broad range of topics
Following the project launch in Stuttgart, the German-Malaysian project team fleshed out the trend radar methodology and identified topics that are particularly relevant to Malaysian SMEs. In addition to separate technology radars focusing on Industrie 4.0 and renewable energy, the project partners developed a radar exclusively for non-technical trends and another for food processing. ITONICS GmbH, a German provider of online visualizations for technology management, handled the graphics for the online tool.
Multiple advantages for SMEs
The finished tool was presented to the Malaysian public in May. A key benefit the TMR offers Malaysian SMEs is an increased awareness of emerging technologies and current market trends. It puts them in a better position to plan investment and growth strategies and also provides them with a wider range of information to create strategic roadmaps and supports the exchange of knowledge between technology experts from research and industry. Thanks to the platform’s collaborate approach, users can work together to ensure the trend radar provides high-quality and up-to-date information.
