Fire protection: BAM is exploring ways to improve safety for the disabled

Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

Wermelskirchen, 09/06/2017. On 10 and 11 June, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is conducting an interdisciplinary research project on motion study in which about 350 people with and without disabilities are participating. The aim is to develop fire protection and rescue concepts to increase safety for people with physical, mental or age-related impairments.

In cooperation with the Jülich Supercomputer Centre, typical everyday life movements are recorded in one of the community halls in Bergisches Land Primary Health Care Centre in Wermelskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. A diverse group of people with and without aids must take various routes in the building. Video technology and sensors then simultaneously track and record the individual movement. The accumulated data is then used to calculate various evacuation scenarios.

"City planning concepts for inclusion mostly focus on accessibility, but not on evacuation from the buildings in an emergency", says project manager Dr. Anja Hofmann-Böllinghaus of BAM’s ‘Technical Properties of Polymeric Materials’ Division. "This is where our study starts: We want to develop rescue concepts that take account of these groups of people in need of help. Our aim is to improve escape routes and develop training concepts for carers and rescue workers."

The motion study is part of the interdisciplinary research project "SiME – Safety for people with physical, mental or age-related impairment" funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). BAM is coordinating the project and is cooperating with the project partners Jülich Supercomputer Centre, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, the Bergisches Land Primary Health Care Centre, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and PTV Transport Consult Ltd.
